I watched a little of the vcu game the other day. Watching them play defense and what we call defense is night and day. They are 3-0 and we are 0-3....fix the damn defense Dave!

It might not be the popular view or even correct, but it’s how I feel:

When you compete with low majors for recruits, can you be shocked when we are playing like a low major?

When Coach L had us rolling, we were competing with the A10 for recruits in the CAA. Now we are competing with the Patriot League and the CAA for recruits in the A10. You might get lucky and hit every now and then, but you are what you are.

I still think you can compete and be marginally successful by having hard working lower skilled guys, but at some point we need to increase the level of player we are bringing in if we want to be competitive every year.

I’m not sure if Dave is the guy or not, but I know you can’t fire a guy after 3 bad results. We have improved each year under him. This year after three games it looks like we have taken a giant step back.

We don’t agree on much, but we would probably all agree that this has been as disappointing of a start as we can remember considering the expectations.

Such anger.....accept that we are a middle of the pack A10 team and enjoy the pre/post game beers like everyone else!

I'm not sure what all the alarm is. We're obviously not playing well, but we're 5 minutes of good basketball away from being 3-0.

Oh well.

.

It was only a matter of time before this would become obvious, especially with some A10 programs consistently pulling in 4 star recruits.

The recruiting ability of DP was my biggest concern when we hired him. And it should of been looked at better by Edwards. Having Muscala go to the NBA over inflated the value of DP. To me, he is just a C+ coach, a C+ recruiter. Like a tony shaver. Will have the occasionally run in the conf when the stars align. But will sit quietly and be average. At least Shaver is a straight shooter and doesn't over sell his program.

Who would even take the Mason job at this point? I hope Mason goes after an assistant from a winning P5 program.

C-plus coaches don’t win NCAA national championships, regardless of it being Division III.

DP obviously hasn’t done a great job through the first three games this season, but he has proven he’s a good basketball coach. It’s unlikely he just all of a sudden forgot how to do it.

The title of this thread is half stupid but it just shows the anger we have for the program right now. A lot of people have poured their hard earned money into this team to get them out of the hole of Hewitt. This season was suppose to be the fruit of our labor but it looks like we are right back in the hole. If the season continues like this I'm worried most of the support will leave. We all know a bad investment when we see one.

This is what confuses/bothers me. You'd figure a guy who's won at a high level has had to make in-game/in-season adjustments, but I'm seeing none of it through 3 games. If a team is running a layup drill, make them do something different.

I am equally mystified. We can’t keep playing this style of defense and expect the results to improve. I have to believe he knows that by now.

Dave's not going anywhere, nor does he deserve to at this point. I'm as frustrated and befuddled as everyone else, but he's earned the right and time to figure this out.

That said, he can't be the solution until he realizes he's the problem. He recruited every player on this roster, and it's his systems on both ends of the floor he's running. If said players can't run said systems, it's incumbent on the coach to make adjustments.

If that means altering and even changing a great deal of our offensive and defensive schemes, so be it; if it means changing the starting lineup and rotations, so be it. This is 100% his dumpster fire now, and only he can put it out. Stubbornly doing the same thing over and over again just because it worked in the Patriot League or DIII just pours more gasoline on that fire.

I'm not going to rehash the problems through the first 3 games, we got a board full of Woodenrzyzewskalipparittino experts already diagnosing that from their desks.

I will point out that it's been three games. Three craptastic games, but three games with at least 27 more to go. If the team does turn it around, the same nitwits who think this thread is anything but completely special needs, the same ones salivating to moisten Reuter's crank all Summer before he'd played a minute for the team, will be the same ones clamoring to hop on the bandwagon. Just like the little troll and douche duo did last year. I will again stand at the door telling them to F themselves in the A. Repeatedly. Hard and violently. DJ3 will happily comply.

So as a quick reminder, Paulsen took over a 9-22 (4-14) team, which proceeded to lose 6 of its 9 top scorers. That first class was mostly garbage, thrown together late in the season w/the exception of Otis who will go down as one of the better players the program has ever had.

  • Season #1 Paulsen went 11-21 (5-13) but some improvements were apparent.
  • Season #2, the team goes 20-12 (9-9) for the first Mason A-10 squad that doesn't end the year w/a losing record. Marquise Moore develops into a rebounding machine and Jenkins develops into a scorer.
  • Season #3, most reasonable fans expect a step back as the team has zero Seniors and just 2 Juniors on scholarship and lost 2 of its 3 best players. It manages to win 7 of its 11 final games (including @vcu & @St. Joe's & breaking the GW losing streak) as the team coalesces and ends up finishing 4th in the A10, it's the best finish ever.
  • Season #4, the team unexpectedly loses the first 3 games. Large chunks of message board fans act like stereotypical millennials and lose their sh!t.
So chill the F out. The 2005-06 Mason squad started out 1-2 and that included a 20-point home loss.
