I would not be as frustrated/disappointed with the team this year had Paulsen himself not made comments about judging the team on two years. My frustration level increased when DP talked about Rueter being a possible top 5 A10 player, sorry don't see that at all. In many respects Paulsen created the expectations for this season himself. If the team doesn't live up to the hype then he needs to own it and explain to the fan base, in honest terms, why the team has not met expectations. In my opinion DP has never been totally honest or transparent with the fan base.

If he had come out in preseason saying there was still a lot of work to do and that the team was not ready yet I would have tempered my expectations, if suitable rationale was given.

I’m going to say yes and no to this. Initially I think Paulsen was hyping the team a lot, particularly earthly in the summer pre-Spain trip. We also exceeded expectations last year and that’s clouding expectations for this year.

Should he own all of they hyping he did do, yeah. Reuter is good, but he’s not all American and there’s a reason why he transferred from UVA. That’s probably the most annoying part of the hype that stirred this summer.

However, if you listens to his comments closer to the start of the season he tried to tamp down expectations. He almost choked when the women’s coach put him on the spot about winning the league during mason madness. He quickly walked back that comment. So, I started to read between the lines with that and the poor play in Spain and the closed scrimmages.

Let’s hope he figures out team chemistry and rotations soon. No more hype.
