The Official Fire Dave Paulsen Thread

completely unacceptable performance. Although the title thread of this is amusing, Paulsen isn't going away.

I would like to see complete changes to the lineup effective immediately.

Paulsen is 100% to blame on this. Not only was this supposed to be a banner year, he took the team to Spain on a foreign tour. I got to admit, seeing us lose an international exhibition kind of caught me off-guard, but then it re-appeared when we only beat Johns Hopkins by 10 Points.

Then add insult to injury, when we lost to Penn, AU, and a gut wrenching 20-point blown lead to Georgia Southern, sometimes decisions are made for you.

No defense whatsoever, and sloppy point guard/ball handling play. Dave is at fault, he knows it.

A real loyal bunch, Mason basketball fans.

This thread is more embarrassing than our team’s nonexistent defense.

Maybe some orange wedges for the kids might be more fitting for their laying it on the line and competitiveness?

Maybe a regular Mountain Dew for the short dude who wears a tie on the bench?

I understand we are all so desperate for DP to be the answer; we were willing to overlook red flags. Making excuses for a coach only does a disservice to the program. For example. Edwards gave DP an extension after a losing season last year.

I also understand Hewitt was horrible. I am not disputing that. However, it is time to move away from excuses and start actually evaluating DP. Is he going to move the program forward?

I think pepole need to step back and look at the big picture.

Paulsen's record is

11-21 (5-13) t-12th
20-14 (9-9) t-7th
16-17 (9-9) t-5th

We have lost 3 games by a total of 12 pts due alot of communication errors on both ends of the floor.

We could easily be 3-0. Let's put down the torches and pitch forks and see if he can get the players to clean up details.

1. No Rim Protector/Stretch Option. Reuter and Calixte are so slow defensively they cannot rotate in time to provide help defense. AJ is great and is meant to play the 4, the team is missing someone 6.10 who can help at the rim and shoot a 3. Guards are just blowing by our guards.
2. Point guard play: Our offense is running on 4 options. Turnover, Chuck up a contested layup, throw it to reuter in the post or travel. For a senior-led team that plays two guards that played PG in HS this team turns over the ball way too often.
3. Mar - Regressed significantly, he has done nothing but shoot air balls and turn the ball over. Then Paulsen plays him at the 4 and he gets bodied by taller, bigger players. He needs to be playing the 3 not the 4.
4. Not enough freshman minutes: Hartwell has PLAYED better than Otis to this point in the season and JDS hasn't played any meaningful minutes.

I know Paulsen has inherited a dumpster fire but part of being a great coach is how you recruit. We can't keep saying the players suck but paulsen is a good coach and just needs better talent. It's still very early in the season and I hope they turn it around.

He already has moved the program forward. Is he the guy to take it to the top of the A-10? That is still TBD.

But hey, enjoy your moment in the sun. I know you are loving this.

It is about how we lost these games not that we lost them... Up late on Penn by 9 with their 2nd best player out of game 3 mins in. Grayer plays 9 mins (only kid on team that can consistently hit shots from outside). Ole defense lets a guy with 4 fouls make 3 straight layups. Otis turns the ball over 3 times late and we lose. Paulsen sticks with Reuter over AJ when everybody else in the Pat Dome would have made the switch 5 mins into the game for the rest of the game. JDS 0 mins

American: see above for defense not able to stop non-athletic guards from running a layup line on us. Otis two straight bricks from the free throw line to lose the game. Hartwell contributes with a steal the second he gets into the game and then gets subbed out and benched to end it. JDS 0 mins (brought in as an outside threat which he very much is)

Georgia Southern: need I say much more about last night without beating it dead?

Looking at the big picture only makes things worse. DP's overall record is 47- 55. (.460)

Sure Mason could easily be 3-0, but they could easily have finished the season 12-21 last year if they lost their four OT games.

For the record, I hate this! I want nothing more than to see Mason win. That is why I want DP out!

He has not moved the program forward at all. He had one winning season with Moore and Jenkins who are extremely talented.

Not ready to give up on DP. Not ready to give up on the season. Of course I feel like a Hillary supporter the day after election day but I'm used to that now.

You have been against him from the start and now you just want to be able to say you were right. Just admit it. The truth shall set you free.

Here's what bothers me the most:

I've watched basketball for 30 years now and the one thing I've learned, maybe the only thing is, you cannot win playing poor defense. Defense has to be the #1 priority. If it's not, you will lose. If defensive plan A is not working, go to plan B even if it is to your detriment offensively. A team should have a set defensive identity/scheme, but know how to play multiple defenses depending on the opponent. Sometimes simply by switching a defense, even if you're playing it incorrectly, the other team gets confused and out of sorts for a good 4 or 5 possessions until they figure out what is being thrown at them. The layup line we saw last night might have been the single most infuriating thing I've seen watching this team the last 20+ years.

Nothing pisses me off more than a coach saying "That's not our scheme or that's not what we do" in response to a question about adjusting a game plan. That's just crappy coaching.

I don’t want to say I’m right. But yes I was alarmed when DP struggled with Thompson, Jenkins, and Moore.

The Hewitt b.s. is no longer an excuse. This is a team built with Paulsen's players, who know exactly what he expects. With the increase in practice time, you would think that a rotation would have been figured out before now, but apparently it's going to take a little bit longer to get the best combos on the floor. He can't just wait for things to click, adjustments need to be made immediately.

Every thing above is all about communication issues amongst players which lead to execution problems on both ends of the floor.

Example, the GAS pg goes straight down the lane and reuter follows his big who moving out of lane. No one rotated to either take a charge or place a body in front of the pg.

Richmond looked alot worse last year losing to Delaware by 13, Jacksonville st. by 33 enroute to a 2-10 ooc record!

They ended 9-9 seated tied for 5th in conference.

Let's tap the brakes and see he and the team can make the proper adjustments.
