Predict the Next Coach Pool

You can't say pulling this diversity card wouldn't get buts in seats. Woman head coach in major conference headed by a woman. A match made in Mason.

Seriously, I have no idea who to think will be our next coach. I don't recall anyone predicting Hewitt last time. This is part 2 of the sit and wait process.

I've seen a couple of people mention Bill Coen from NorthEastern.
From watching his teams play during the CAA and the recent NCCA - he
seems to be a real X's and O's coach that gets the most from his players. He also seemed to give Shaka Smart's teams fits even when vcu had the better talent.

Lots of names being tossed around right now. I smell a smokescreen....

I'd agree with you if we weren't the ones sending up all the smoke. Like Hugh said this week, Jay Larranaga's name never would have come up in the press had his name not been mentioned here.

If that is the case, we should revel in our God like powers.

On that note....I have heard from credible friends of reasonable sources that Hewitt is participating as part of the search committee.

This will be my 4th coaching change since I've been a season ticket holder. The hiring of Westhead, Larranaga, & Hewitt was a complete surprise and I expect that this one will be also. So, I believe that the names being bandied about in the media this early in the process (whether they are actually gleaned from this message board or other sources) are unlikely to be serious candidates.

So far, Edwards has filled 3 coaching vacancies here with 2 assistants & one head coach: all from schools (UVA, Iowa, & Alabama) in power conferences. Will the next men's basketball coach have school(s) in a power conference on his resume: as a player and/or coach?

A senior writer from SB Nation thinks this was all from the Larranaga camp:

Jay Larranaga's representation has been pushing rumors since December, it's unknown if GMU has mutual interest.

People keep saying and implying that no one predicted the Hewitt hire. I appreciate Five Two's modesty in not pointing it out, but he called it, even with a tidbit about it giving TOC flashy hire and no (known) violations:

Five Two Predicts Hewitt Could be TOC's Pick

"Paul Hewitt?
Don't know anything about his coaching/recruiting strategy...no NCAA issues (at least I don't think) and is a big name TOC could use to make a flashy hire"

You are correct that Five Two is much too modest to take any credit for the hire:

"I have to admit, this was a total guess on my part. None of my sources (I don't have any) knew of Hewitt interviewing at the time I posted."

Wasn't it said on here that Adam Brick WS the real force in getting Hewitt and Mason together and then TOC ran with it?

Hope Edwards doesn't rely on him this go round if so....

See http://www.washingtonpost.com/sport...d-to-turn-down/2011/05/02/AF2HfnbF_story.html:

"But then last Tuesday, Hewitt’s cellphone rang. He didn’t recognize the 571 area code and let the call go to voicemail. A few hours later, he checked the messages. It was Adam Brick, a senior associate athletic director at George Mason and among five university officials conducting a search for Jim Larranaga’s replacement."

Too bad the mailbox on Hewitt's phone wasn't full.

I don't know that he was the force. It has been said that it was a name he threw out, and given his position, he would have been one of the likely people to make contact.

Kind of like I found it hard to judge the players too harshly with Hewitt being their coach, I find it hard to completely blame the people below TOC and Merten. TOC and Merten had their beliefs on the the way things should be done in the AD and the people below them had to work within framework laid out for them.

I know I have been in meetings where the restrictions laid out on the decision making process that are nonsensical (and there was nothing I could do to change them), so I have had to throw out ideas within that framework. If someone then took my ideas out of context and said that it was my suggestion, it would not be fair to judge my ideas based on that.

That makes his guess all the more impressive. I guess Five Two understood TOCs mindset better than anyone else on the boards. I didn't say he wanted Hewitt, just that he made the call that was who TOC might pick. This thread and the one Five Two posted in are about who we predict will be the next coach (not who we want).

Pretty cool that TOC -- uh, I mean "Five Two" -- still posts here occasionally during his retirement years.

If the new coach turns out to be Will Brown, I will have to conclude that "Five Two" is the official account used by the AD to post on here.

If G Mas is able to get Will Brown for U of Albany, that would be quite a hire. They have been to 5 NCAA tournaments over the last 10 years and 3 in a row. I think he might be looking for something a little higher.
