Offseason A10 Recruiting/Transfer Thread

Think we should have any concern for being ranked 11th in the conference in recruiting for 2018? And what year(thinking 2020) do you think we will start to get the higher ranked players (especially in our area)?

Good question - yes and no.

Not knowing where those rankings are from or what the criteria was that was used, we only have three guys coming in. I know some rankings place value in numbers and will give a large recruiting class more points... not sure if that was the case here.

I’m a little concerned because when you look at our guys and who we beat to land them, I don’t feel like they are programs equivalent to ours. Hartwell was a late addition and was just starting to get offers... Miller had more interest, but hardly any from A10 caliber teams. There is some concern there, but they aren’t any different than most of our current guys and most of them have shown that they are A10 caliber. I think our staff has shown at this point that they recruit a little different than we are used to. They are able to find the right type of player and develop the talent, so they should get the benefit of the doubt. Winning recruiting ratings doesn’t really equal winning basketball games. It’s been a hard adjustment for me, but I trust the staff at this point.

Douglas-Stanley is a little different. He reminds me more of the type of kid Larranaga was landing. I really think he would have landed some big time offers if he would have waited. He had a great senior year and has impressive film. I am really excited to see what JD-S can do.

So yeah, I would like us to land some bigger targets, but the guys they have brought in have been under the radar guys and have worked out well. At some point, you have to trust the staff and give them credit for knowing what they are doing. I think I’m finally at that point.

I'm with Gunnie. On one hand I'm not that worried because the staff has shown they can identify talent. 3 starters from the last 2 seasons (Otis, Grayer, and Kier) were D1 after thoughts.

On the other hand I think just from a pure talent and athletic perspective (the stuff you can't coach), I think we need to be higher on those types of rankings relative to our A10 counterparts sooner rather than later. But those lists are subjective and we have not had any real success since 2011 when recruits were 9 or 10 years old.

Keep identifying overlooked talent, turn that into successful seasons, then be able to recruit higher level athletes (who still have the characteristics our coaches are looking for). That's 3 steps, and hopefully we are taking step 2 this year.

Scoutrankings is likely what he was referring to: https://247sports.com/Season/2018-Basketball/CompositeTeamRankings?Conference=A-10

Was this one of those rankings where TEAM A with Five 2-Star players is ranked higher than TEAM B with Three 3-Star players because their cumulative number of stars is 10 compared to 9?

Duquesne was last on their list last year... They had better freshman than about 5 of the teams ahead. Davidson was 6th with the best freshman in the conference...

We can be whatever position on any of these recruiting websites... as long as we are near top in the standings...

BTW seen 5 ft 5 Shandon Brown (GW top recruit) play.... Otis is going to eat him for breakfast lunch and dinner... plays less defense than Otis (ole ole) and won't be able to score in college basketball unless the person guarding him is shorter

Kids choose schools for all different types of reasons but a big one is that they want to play for winning teams and play in the NCAA tournament. We haven’t been dancing in a long time.
I completely trust the coaching staff in their recruiting, I think they’ve done a great job at bringing in kids that fit their system with limited resources. I believe after this season recruiting may get a little easier for them and the rankings may get slightly better with the new practice facility and hopefully a visit to the NCAA tournament under their belt.

Yea I was referencing 247 sports. They seem to do more in recruiting than ESPN. Have trust in the staff I guess I want to be greedy and get more "Mar type players" impactwise on the roster

Funny enough, Hartwell is the only player ranked on our list by 247 Sports and is the one player that put us ahead of La Salle for last place. Weird that Davidson and St. Bonaventure aren't on the list anywhere.

Don't know why you are looking at that, shows zero stars for JDS and Miller

What sites have JDS with more than 0 stars? I like the kid but the only site I have come across that has him with any stars would be VC..

Both he and Jordan Miller are unrated altogether, I think, by the recruiting services, which seems crazy since JDS plays for Mount Vernon and was Mr. Basketball for his section and Jordan Miller was first team All Met this year. You'd think some recruiting services would have seen them playing even by accident.

Exactly, all those sites are garbage, especially once you get past a certain position in the rankings (meaning they don't even evaluate the lower ranked players).

In football, which gets far more coverage/analysis/resources from these sites, Miami had the #1 ranked class in '08 I think it was, ended up being a terrible terrible class.

I am concerned because if you don't sign a bit higher rated recruits, it becomes harder to reload and going dancing is far and few in between seasons. I would hate to be in a multi bid league and not make it to the dance because we are dealing with a huge slip in roster experience.

Plus, look at our seniors now, they only have one shot to win a game in the NCAA tourney which they have zero experience in going to. I'f they get in this year.

Trust the process...I guess.

I agree with GS... wait - am I allowed to agree with GS and Gunnie in the same thread?!

Seriously - I hope and assume that Paulsen would fully intend to capitalize on the potential to recruit higher caliber athletes at a successful A10 school than he was able to do at Bucknell (or the beginning at Mason).

I think the correction might be higher profile athletes, not higher caliber. Marquise Moore was a monster athlete and he was pretty much unrecruited out of high school. AJ Wilson on the roster right now is a monster athlete too.

I think another thing to say might be "more polished, or more complete players," because both AJ Wilson and Marquise Moore before him were unpolished coming in. Like you said earlier, more Goanar Mar types.

How about we just say "better" players? ;)

I think we are all on the same page here
