Offseason A10 Recruiting/Transfer Thread

I know I see this situation much differently than most of you, but if our coaches like a guy enough to offer one of 13 scholarships, I couldn’t care less about the opinion of a recruiting “analyst” who probably had seen the kid play once (if at all).

Especially now that the roster isn’t shorthanded and the staff no longer has to take fliers on kids, I trust their ability to find and sign unselfish, coachable kids who fit what they’re trying to do at a championship level.

This is why Dave chose to build with 4-year players instead of transfers and JUCOs. It can take longer to get going, but you don’t have the huge dropoff in performance because one class builds on the next.

How about we just say "better" players? ;)

I think we are all on the same page here

I’m not. Eight of his 12 rostered players have played one season or less in the A10. How do you come to the conclusion DP needs to recruit “better” players? Define better for us.

Paulsen has demonstrated (in my opinion) that he is at least a middle of the road A-10 coach. That combines coaching, recruiting, development, all of it.

After some amount of time, you are what your record says you are, two consecutive .500 years in conference is enough track record for me.

I don't know if he is better than that, but I feel comfortable saying he is no worse. This past season was played entirely with Paulsen players, so there is no credit (as it were) due to Hewitt, IMO.

This next season will be played with a roster full of Paulsen players who have received a full cycle of development, so I am of the belief that it will likely be a good barometer of where the program is likely consistently reside under Paulsen.

I don't consider you dumb, mayne!

I think if anything you handled it better than me. For me there would also have been the initial fear and confusion, gradually giving way to hate.

Beautiful unadulterated hate. And a mission later that night to take out the Monarch propaganda.
FWIW, I still consider ODU as "my" primary rival. I know, JMU. I know, vcu. I know, GW. I know.

Knowing all that doesn't stop me from hating all men with mustaches to this day. It doesn't stop me from watching videos where hunters kill lions and feeling a little bit glad about it. It doesn't stop me from my life quest of never setting foot in Norfolk. It doesn't stop me from rooting against whatever NBA team Kent Bazemore is on.

F ODU. Here's hoping they all catch face cancer.

Um... better players that would make us a perennial top 25 team or higher. Players that will potentially end up in the NBA.

Do you think we are recruiting the caliber players to compete with the top programs in the Country on a consistent basis? Even if in the best case scenario our guys are the best in the A10 this year and the next several, we are still certainly a notch below the ACC, right?

Confused as to what is hard to understand about what better means. It means... better. Taller, faster, stronger, more athletic, more developed when they arrive, etc.

And this is in NO way a knock on our current players, I love all of our guys and Otis will go down as one of my all time favorites.

Nobody in the A-10 consistently recruits top-25 caliber talent. That’s one reason the league is so competitive, the recruiting tends to be cyclical.

If we’re gonna expect the staff to recruit on that level, our fan base is gonna need to step up its game significantly (possible) and we’ll have to get into a better league (not happening).

Personally, I’m thrilled with the program’s trend line. We are in very good hands with Dave and Co.

The talent acquisition process is tied directly to program identity, institutional support, institutional identity, conference identity, player development and the overall belief the recruit will be a player in a “perennial top 25 program or higher”. This process is a massive enterprise that goes light years beyond simply finding better talent. Your type of better does not happen over-night nor without complete institutional buy-in. Now, let’s get better.

You guys are severely misinterpreting what I'm saying. Only saying we should be recruiting higher level/caliber players in several years after we have success on the court than we currently are. That should be the expectation of nearly every program in the Country except for maybe Duke, UNC, Kansas and Kentucky.

Not trying to be argumentative, but by whose standards will we decide whether future players are higher level than our current players?

I think it’s pretty likely we will be attractive to more HIGHLY RANKED players after we go to the NCAAs and win a game or two, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they will be BETTER than the current guys.

Paulsen's standards.

vcu fans are going crazy waiting for today’s 5pm decision of 5 Star Bigman Armando Bacot Jr. they are in his top 5 with UNC, Duke, Georgia, and OK ST. He’s from Tichnond so I think it’s just more of a respect thing. Most of the experts think he’s going to UNC.

That said vcu has made a lot of well rated players cut lists this summer, guessing Rhoades is a pretty good recruiter.

So many great players come out of the great city of Tichmond. The great Mason legend Peterson was born in Tichmond.

Makes me really bitter to see Miami and vcu/URI on the finalist lists for kids from Flint Hill and PVI, without Mason :super angry:

But I guess that's what happens when you are in the ACC/make 8 or so consecutive NCAA tournaments.
