Not blowing you up as you are just providing the info.

But we have heard this same song and dance for 15+ years.... "we have people and teams in place to go after big donors." Really then... what's your plan?

Seen this movie before..... until they can actually bring in someone other than Eagle Bank, Interstate Van Lines and Jim McKay then it's just blowing sunshine up our asses with same ol shit different day.

Its definitely a lot of the same talk. It was interesting in Marvin's newsletter yesterday that he announced the basketball fund and wants to fund-raise 500k specifically for it by 6/30.
I feel like Charlie Brown with Lucy holding the football that I have fallen for this so many times now. Maybe I am gullible or I just want it to be true with every fiber in my body, but, THIS TIME, I think it is for real. I am seeing a little more than just the talk. It is just small things so far, but they seem to be really seem to be trying to get the heavy hitters to direct money towards the basketball program/athletics.

One bit of evidence If you watch that BOV you see the Jon Peterson bit where he is talking about athletics. He has always supported Mason athletics, but, his really big donations have gone to other areas. He seems to have turned the corner in that area. There are other areas where the President and AD seem to be going on a campaign to educate the right people about the need to fund our athletics program sufficiently.

I have my fingers crossed and my hopes are at an all time high that the stars are finally lining up for Mason to make all the right moves to drive our basketball teams to new heights and thereby bring the rest of the sports along for the ride.

NOVA is swimming in money. We just need to tap into it. Maybe it's for real this time.

I don't watch the BOV meetings usually but I was encouraged by the amount of time spent discussing athletics in general. The discussion was constructive and they seemed to understand where Mason was and where they can try to take athletics.

Its not going to be easy. I don't think anyone with 85 or 100m is walking through the door tomorrow so that athletics can have their own area of campus, but being clear with a plan of what they need, having drives of 500k, and directing big donors to try and help with key athletics initiatives are all great signs.

The athletic department is the “Front porch” of the University.

That is a way different stance than TOC who as our athletic director believed we were the doggy door on the back of the house.
I remember that “tail of the dog” reference he made and a few years after he left, he contacted me about donating. I reminded him of that quote, and my opinion of it… didn’t hear from him again.

So AFTER he left Mason, he was contacting you about donating to Mason???

Yeah he had some kind of development consulting arrangement after he left the AD seat. I was living on the Jersey Shore at the time and he lived there too. I guess the alumni database highlighted me as a potential donor in his area, so he reached out.

Somebody remind me again. Where does the $3 million for men's basketball come from, in relation to the house settlement case? And is it 3 million per year?

Seems like the plan is to work up to $3 million per year over the next 3 years. So potentially, 1, 2, 3 or something like that.

The money comes from the school/athletic department. They will take a slice of their revenue and distribute it to players.

A few weeks ago, I asked where my dollars could make the most impact. I was told that a new initiative was being developed and that it would be where I should focus if my primary interest was supporting basketball. It was recently rolled out in Marvin's latest newsletter: Hopefully there's more communication/education on the horizon.

Power Basketball Greatness

To seize the opportunities to elevate our basketball programs to the highest level, we must invest now. That’s why we’re launching the Power Basketball Greatness Initiative—a cornerstone of our athletics case for support within the university’s $1 billion comprehensive Mason Now: Power the Possible fundraising campaign.

Our goal: $500,000 by June 30, 2025.

This initiative ensures that George Mason Basketball thrives, consistently contending for A-10 championships and regularly making NCAA postseason berths. Your investment today strengthens our ability to:
  • Recruit and retain top-tier student-athletes and coaches.
  • Enhance facilities and resources for sustained success.
  • Keep George Mason at the forefront of A-10 basketball dominance.

So, we should donate to the Initiative, not the collective?

???
Initiative is via the University, so the donations are tax deductible.
Collective is not, so the donations are not tax deductible.

So, we should donate to the Initiative, not the collective?
Well, that's part of the continued education that's needed. Will the collective work in-conjunction with this new fund moving forward? How will the new work guidelines affect what the collective does. Etc.

This new thing is essentially a slush fund that can be applied where needed for Men's and Women's Basketball. Some dollars will go to players, some will go to coaches, some can go to facilities, etc. So, I think for those who have a fundamental issue with NIL, or contributing directly to the players, this new fund is a great option, because those dollars can be used for any number of things.

Until things become clearer, I'd say keep doing what you're comfortable doing. I trust that the collective will put whatever dollars it receives to the most effective use.

While I love the purpose of this new fund, and believe in its importance, I do wish it would've been introduced with more guidance for the common fan. I believe more communication is coming, but June 30th feels like it's tomorrow.

What do you guys think about the email that just went out to Patriot Club members about making a donation to Men's and Women's basketball?
Personally, I feel better about that than NIL, but from I have read here today, does it really make a difference. I'm looking for some clarity.
I also received another email from Mason today asking for money for some other drive. It was Mason Vision Day, whatever the heck that is.
Any help!?
