Name the next head coach (a GMUJim tribute album)

I think that fans from almost any school believe their institution deserves to be considered a top job and has a chance with the popular names out there (which everyone obviously has a chance). The key is to keep things in perspective. As a mason alumni and fan it's frustrating to constantly compare to the 06 team. This is a new day and a new start (new AD and president). I think it's necessary that whoever gets the job to buy into the vision Edwards and company have moving forward. Which should include: rebranding (helps move the perception of being a has been Cinderella to a school that is a premier mid major), revitalize fan base (a new coach helps, but strides must be made in game day experience), and finding ways to enhance the marketing of our program. So, whether it's a guy like Howland, an up and comer in cherry, or a high level assistant, I just want someone dedicated to building us into what we should have been after 06.

I think our conference makes us more appealing than our program right now. We might be down now, but a coach at a low major or middle mid major knows he has a better chance of getting to the NCAAT in the A10 than having to put all of his eggs in the basket of his conference tournament.

Case in point: Murray State had a great season (27-5 overall, 16-0 in conference), lost a 1-point heartbreaker to Belmont in the Ohio Valley tournament, and was relegated to the NIT after not getting an at-large. There's no question Murray State is a much better program than ours right now or that they had a better season. Going to the NIT is still a nice consolation prize for their program.

But the upside of our program in the A10- — coupled with our history — has to be appealing to a coach like Steve Prohm. I'm not saying he's been contacted or not, but he's a great example of a coach who should be licking his chops to make the move to the A10 and a program like George Mason.

Purnell was making $2.3M per year...That's over triple what Mooney makes. A lot of the same things that are being said about DePaul were said about Providence a few years ago, but Cooley has brought them to the tournament 2 years in a row...and Chicago certainly trumps Providence.

B. Hurley just got major face time during halftime of gtown v. Utah. Not afraid to schedule. Didn't know they played Wisconsin and Kentucky. Pretty awesome

UNCC message board seems to think Capel is their next target. Good. We have no interest in him.

Yeah I think the a10 has got to be one of the top up and coming conferences, so happy we left the sinking caa ship when we did. Although we are bottom dwellers now we definitely have the resources, size, and location to dominate

Mooney makes more than $1M per year and has since UR gave him a huge raise to keep him following their Sweet 16 in 2011.

He'd be a fool to leave Richmond, where his seat isn't the least bit warm even after 4 straight seasons of no NCAA, for a DePaul job where it's basically impossible to win unless you pay off the Chicago street agents to send you players.

So double, not triple, what Mooney makes (I saw Mooney's salary reported at $700K). Purnell was making $1.6M when he left Clemson for DePaul, where he got $14M-$15M guaranteed for 7 years. DePaul is eating $4.5M of that. If you're willing and able to pay $2M+ per year, you'll have candidates.

The problem with DePaul is that they've been chasing Anthony Davis, Jabari Parker, Okafor, etc. and not paying enough attention to the Frank Kaminskys, Fred Van Vleets and Kendall Pollards. Van Vleet's Stepdad specifically mentioned DePaul as a school that 'snubbed' his son because he was on a Rockford AAU team and not a Chicago one. Frank Kaminsky is from suburban Chicago and said, "the only in-state schools that recruited him were Southern Illinois, Bradley and Northwestern 'a little bit'.” http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2014/03...represent-the-illinois-products-who-got-away/

Even Hewitt could have a team with those three on it in the tournament...right?

Only if we can defeat the siren's call of Starkville, Mississippi.
We better be able to do that easily. Not like selling ice to Eskimos. To wit:

Starkville is a city in Mississippi, United States. It is the county seat of Oktibbeha County. The Starkville Micropolitan Statistical Area includes all of Oktibbeha County. The population was 23,888 at the 2010 census. The campus of Mississippi State University is located directly to the east of Starkville.

Look, Howland is a good coach, but I'm not going to start feeling like the sky is falling if we don't get him....Plenty of good candidates out there.
