Name the next head coach (a GMUJim tribute album)

First, you don't know whether your source was referring to Howland. Secondly, who knows if he's interested in the job (he evidently turned down other schools). Thirdly, why wouldn't the search committee include him on the list of highly qualified candidates, if he is interested in the position?

I think there is a disconnect here. Do you mean search committee? or search FIRM? Major difference.

This is an older story from when Howland first got the UCLA job, but it notes that he indeed is "an adidas coach."

Pitt wore adidas when Howland was there. So did UCLA.

Especially since our athletic apparel contract is up, I think it's fair to say that if we see Ben Howland on the Mason sideline next season, our players will be wearing adidas.

When we have had seasons like the last three - the last thing I care about is the brand of shoe and shirt my guys are wearing. As long as we are dunking on our opponents and making them face splat our balls while we hang on the rim - they could be wearing birkenstocks and I would not give a shit.

For anybody here who knows state/federal EEO law: How long does our head coaching position have to remain open for applications?

Just curious because we should start hearing things about coaches being interviewed, etc., shortly after the application period closes.

I think with a state school any position has to stay open for 30 days which I think the AD position stayed open that long if I recall...

Obviously I have no idea how this stuff works, but Hewitt was hired only a little more than a week after Larranaga tendered his resignation.

Maybe coaching positions are classified differently for EEO purposes?

Yeah I have no clue either. Maybe because that was a resignation not a firing, rules are different? I'd have to research or ask my fiancee' who got her masters in Higher Ed.

Here's the link for the job announcement for the women's soccer head coach in which applicants had 1 month to apply for full consideration - see https://www.higheredjobs.com/details.cfm?JobCode=175998643.

Perhaps if state position is also paid by supplement entities the 30 day rules dont apply?

Private schools have to adhere to Federal EEO laws especially if they receive Federal funding through grants and contracts.

Interesting. Generally, athletic departments decide what companies to go with, although I think it would be naive to think the new coach would not have any influence. I think adidas products are ugly but if it means a wimming basketball team we could go with Etonic!

I'm sorry if I missed it but where is the Howland speculation coming from? Is this just a wish list guy or was there any real evidence showing he's considering Mason or Mason is perusing him . I personally think there's no way we get him.

I don't want to speak for Gunnie, but I think the reason we care is twofold. First, how much money the university can bring in. The higher amount would mean a higher amount could be spent on basketball (coaches, facilities, etc.) and we all agree improvement there is needed. The second reason is how it effects recruiting. While us old people could care less (excluding aestetics), many 15-17 year olds being recruited by a bunch of schools really do care what gear they will have. If that person chooses another school instead of us it effects our product on the court. Now whether teenagers should be influenced by this is another discussion in and of itself, but we come at it from a different perspective than a teenager.

So who we go with can have both positive and negative effects on what we see on the court. That's why we care.
