Ben Howland would be a great land.

Seth Greenburg re-upped his contract with ESPN so he and Jay Bilas can still hold hands with each other.

If the term "significant hire" came from Big Brad then I'm looking far beyond Cherry, Caputo, YCM, and Anthony Grant. Brad strikes me as an aggressive beast in terms of his drive for success at Mason.

That was my thought as well.

I think B-Cubed has BIG plans for Mason basketball, as well as the confidence, intelligence and passion to make those plans a reality.

A "significant hire," to me, is one that will make fans of other A-10 schools say, "Oh sh!t, Mason is serious."

None of the names mentioned in Goff's article come close to that level.

Can we hire Seth Greenburg's daughter to coach in a bikini? That should be worth 10-15 fast break points per game at least.

How about have her be the Gold Room fluffer. I would buy that for a dollar.

So, Howland is making $300,000 the next two years to not coach. Courtesy of UCLA.

If he is hired somewhere those payments disappear.

Mason would have to go balls out to hire that guy, I imagine. Can't see it.

I can see it. Pay him 775000 a year plus performance bonus. Doable.

I know there was a buzz about Skerry when he turned Towson around, but that may have been a "Benimon" effect. He transferred from Georgetown, was red-shirted, and then dominated the league for 2 yrs. Once he graduated, Towson is back to being an under .500 team. They finished 9th in the CAA, winning only 5 league games. They've upgraded their facilities and he's been there 4 years so he has had enough time to recruit his guys. So I'm not convinced he'd be the answer for us.

From his published quotes, many of which have been posted here, Howland doesn't seem to be pining for a "big-time" job.

He wants to coach again very badly. For whatever reason, the P-5 schools don't seem interested in giving him a chance to do so.

If B-Cubed contacted him during the season, when nobody else was in the market for a coach, and got a chance to sell Howland on his plan for improving Mason's fundraising/facilities/etc, who's to say he couldn't have closed the deal?

It's not like we're still in a one-bid CAA. The A-10 is the No. 7 basketball league in America. Totally different dynamic at play than when Larranaga left ... and we still have a Final Four banner in the rafters. We've proven we can win very big.

Not saying he's coming here, obviously, but he's been out of the game for two years. If he waits two more until his UCLA money runs out, his name will be irrelevant to an entire class of high school players. At that point, he may as well stay retired.

Plus, I have a funny feeling that we are only now beginning to feel the impact of the benefits Edwards is going to bring to Mason.

With his contacts and fund-raising acumen, it wouldn't surprise me a bit if he had already raised $5 million and set it aside for a 5-year deal for our new coach.

This isn't your grandfather's university or basketball program anymore.

If Edwards has been talking seriously with Howland about our job behind the scenes, it means one of two things:

1. Howland wants to coach so badly that he's willing to give us a discount.

2. Those "suits" people saw B-Cubed schmoozing during games have decided to come across with enough cheddar to hire a guy who was making $2 million/yr. at UCLA.

Either way, I want the guy. He's one hell of a basketball coach. Assuming all players stay, we immediately become at least a mid-pack A10 team with Howland on the sideline.

If Howland is being recruited, the donors will have to step up big time. Something like vcu does with Smart and VA Tech does with Beamer and Buzz Williams. Otherwise, how did Hewitt wind up as the highest paid state employee? So a big time salary isn't going to be forthcoming via state funding. The big time salary is doable if the coach has a weekly TV show, but that doesn't even happen at Georgetown and Maryland does it?

Hope you're right but I'm thinking the euphoria of the day maybe making us delusional!

If Big Dick Brad lands the coach, I'm extremely confident that means he has the donor funding to pay him.

I know we assume that Mason can't fundraise for basketball because TOC's nuts were stuck in Merten's man-purse, but this is a new day.

Plenty of corporate whales in Mason's backyard. Who knows whose door BDB has been knocking on since last summer?

OK Jim, you have successfully gotten my hopes up. I hope Brad can cash the checks your posts are writing. ;)

I hope so, too. :D

If BDB winds up hiring Darrin Horn (or worse), I'm never gonna be able to post here again. Then I'd actually have to do some work during the day.
