From the LA Times story:

"In my mind, my next job is where I'm going to finish my career,'' he says. "I want to make sure it's the right situation where we have great success."

In typical Howland fashion, he then tightens his jaw and makes a promise.

"I'm really fired up about getting back into it, and I hope to do it next year,'' he says. "And this time around, I will do the best job I've ever done.''

While it would be nice to have him, I believe Mason is going cheap this time. Despite the change in personnel...I still think conservative is still the mantra.

Up and coming assistant who just wants a job, vs a head coach with big time experience who expects money and resources.

While I'm watching Albany and Stony Brook play for the AE championship, how about Stony Brook coach Steve Pikell? He has good teams each year in the AE, they're up on Albany by 6 with 3 1/2 to go. I know Will Brown has been mentioned several times.

I think if GMU is going to get a coach with head coaching experience, it's gonna come from a league like AE. GMU could pay these guys more than they were making in the AE I assume.

Whoever our next coach will be next season, I've got to imagine when they look at our roster they'll wonder how on earth Hewitt managed to lose 40 games over the last two seasons (I'm not in the we don't have any talent camp).

Ben Howland, speaking of, will probably have a pretty good shot of keeping whoever he wants on the roster next year. (including Gilbert, I'd imagine).

Jollay's main man... Blaine Taylor.

Isssss doing the commentary for the Harvard vs. Yale Championship game today on CSN. He shaved the mustache, combed is hair, and lost about 50 pounds. He looks pretty good. Good to see him back in Bball, he must of got his life together.

More on Howland, from an interview with Sports Illustrated writer George Dohrmann that was published last May in The Oregonian. At the time, Howland was considered the front-runner for the Oregon State job, but he later removed himself from consideration:

I think if he comes in now, the existing players will love him because he's got the coaching background. He's going to open guys' eyes to the intricacies of the game. Because Craig was so deficient in the X's and O's part, he will open their eyes to the game in a way that they've never seen before. They'll think about the game in a larger way. They'll appreciate that. Those kids are older. They're starving for good coaching. They just want to be competitive. Ben will get the most out of them in that way.

Hmmmmmmmmm.............
