Marquise Moore

I predict that Mason fans will look back 20 years from now and marvel at the season Marquise Moore is having. That's how impressive he's been this year.

God knows this team might have 4 wins if Moore was not in the line up. No disrespect to Paulsen and the rest of the team....but Moore is having the "legendary season" that brings everyone else along for the ride.

We all know that Marquise has an unorthodox shot, but to me that's what makes his performance this year even that more impressive. As Petey pointed out in his post-game analysis of the St. Joe's game, Demby didn't even pretend to cover Moore outside or even near the arc. He sagged back knowing that 3-point shooting was Marquise's Achille's Heel, but Moore still managed to torch them for 24 points.

How is that even possible? It's like Aaron Rodgers throwing Hail Mary's when everybody knows it's coming. St. Joe's dropped back into prevent coverage to stop Moore from penetrating, and he still cut through them like a knife through butter.

You may be on to something. Marquise's strength could be driving against a sagging defender even when there is help. Perhaps by allowing Marquise space at the arc they are also playing into that strength.

On my youth teams we teach the kids to get within 'close talking' range on their best player so they are always having to fight a tight defender even if we know we will need a bit of help. Typically works against even the best players. However, if we sag the best kids manage to stay in their game.

Sometimes you're just lucky and it gives us success to build on as our young players mature.

and vcu might have six wins w/o their 5 seniors playing this year. It all evolves and coaching counts as the evolution occurs. :googlyeyed:

"We’ll start with some per-game conference play only stats here.

Marquise Moore: 18 points on 12.4 FGA, 10.2 rebounds, 4.6 assists, 1.4 steals, 0.6 blocks.

Marquise’s ability to get to the free throw line has contributed to his efficiency – his 18 points come on only 12.4 shots per game, as he’s getting just under 8 free throw attempts per game as well. You can see the rest of his stat line shows how incredibly well-rounded his game is. Per college basketball reference, he’s one of two players in the country averaging 18 points, 10 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 1 steal in conference play:

"MARQUISE MOORE - A REBOUNDING GUIDE
Senior Marquise Moore is putting up elite rebounding totals this season, but when looking at his stats historically amongst guards, the numbers become even more impressive.

Moore averages 8.9 defensive rebounds/game, which is tops amongst all Div. I college basketball guards since Sports-Reference.com began keeping the stat in 2009-10.

Moore’s 10.8 rebounds/game overall are tied for the most by a guard in Div. I college basketball since the 1993-94 campaign.

Moore’s overall rebounding average is tops amongst all Div. I players 6-foot-2 and under since height/rebounding were recorded extensively by the NCAA in 2001-02.

He is the only player 6-foot-2 and under to rank in the top-50 nationally in rebounding since 2001-02. Since top-100 statistical rankings have been kept (2008-09), the next closest to Moore is Lamar’s Devon Lamb (6-2, 8.3 rpg) in 2010-11.

Over the past seven seasons, Moore is the only Div. I player 6-foot-4 and under to average 10+ rebounds/game. The last to do it was John Brown of Liberty (10.8 rpg in 2010-11)."

"Coming into high school my number one goal was to get a college scholarship. I worked hard throughout my career, and at the end of high school, I had a couple of offers from mainly Division 2 schools and one low Division 1 school. I knew I wanted more. I wanted to play at a higher level.

Being a young senior at 17 years old, I decided to go to prep school at St Thomas More.

Being at prep school really gave me time to mature and focus on my game. Being alone for the first time helped me mature quickly on and off the court. It gave me a lot of time to work on my game and really focus on my weaknesses. At prep school, I really became better at running a team and facilitating. I also became a better defender having to guard top player’s night in and night out.

During that year we were the #2 prep school in the country and our team featured multiple D1 players.

After my prep school year, my work had paid off. I now had several D1 offers that I could choose from. After considering a few other schools, I decided to commit to George Mason University. The campus was nice, I liked the coaches and players, and they were making a very important move. GMU was moving from the CAA conference to the A10 conference which provided great exposure and a chance to play against some of the most talented players in the country."

"After my freshman season, I had knee surgery in the summer. Having tendinitis in my knees since high school, they had become a problem to the point where physical therapy wasn’t helping.

Coming back from knee surgery was one of the toughest things I ever had to do. Countless hours in the training room every day for months of rehab was tough but I was dedicated to coming back even stronger. I finally got cleared after 5 months and had to work extremely hard to try and get back in basketball shape for the upcoming season. I only had about a month until the first game to get ready, but I was dedicated to coming back stronger than ever.

Now in my senior year, my main focus is to stay healthy as I have suffered various ankle injuries over the past 3 years of my college career. I have set the goals of winning an Atlantic 10 championship, making the NCAA tournament, all while being first team all-conference. I worked hard all offseason in trying to make these goals come to fruition."
