Marquise Moore

Jim Furyk has the ugliest golf swing in the world, one you would never teach to your child, and yet he has made millions of dollars and won multiple major titles on the PGA Tour.

Likewise, I couldn't possibly care less whether Marquise ever learns to shoot the ball differently -- or whether he makes a single 3-pointer -- as long as he continues to be unstoppable driving, scoring at the rim and rebounding.

It's not figure skating or Dancing with the Stars. There are no style points. I just hope Marquise's back and shoulders don't get too tired from carrying our team through the remainder of a 31-game season.

Jenkins gets a bum rap for the fouling, because he's all alone out there. Being the lone big (and a not-very-tall one at that) in a four-guard lineup is tough and he's asked to do a lot defensively. It also annoys me that conference refs always know who the players are that get called for a lot of fouls and subsequently call them for things they're letting other guys get away with.

We all know that Marquise has an unorthodox shot, but to me that's what makes his performance this year even that more impressive. As Petey pointed out in his post-game analysis of the St. Joe's game, Demery didn't even pretend to cover Moore outside or even near the arc. He sagged back knowing that 3-point shooting was Marquise's Achille's Heel, but Moore still managed to torch them for 24 points.

How is that even possible? It's like Aaron Rodgers throwing Hail Mary's when everybody knows it's coming. St. Joe's dropped back into prevent coverage to stop Moore from penetrating, and he still cut through them like a knife through butter.

I predict that Mason fans will look back 20 years from now and marvel at the season Marquise Moore is having. That's how impressive he's been this year.

I agree to an extent, but any refs would call the over the back calls. It's so obvious. If he isn't in position for the rebound, he should let it go especially when you are already in foul trouble.

I agree completely with your premise but an over the back call is NOT always obvious. Remember, as is taught in youth basketball constantly, there is actually no such thing as an "over the back" foul... You can reach all the way over another player to grab a rebound. A foul only is called when you push off or hold the other player. I remember at least one over the back in the last game that I rewound and watched 2 or 3 times and couldn't see a hold or push. Just because two people go up, and one of them is behind the other and has a better reach, does not mean he pushed off. And, A10 refs... Just because Jalen is prone to force the issue and try to grab rebounds when he is out of position does not mean you have to call a foul in a situation with incidental, mutual contact that you wouldn't have called on another player. There are very few short rebounds in which there is no contact and no player reaches "over the back" of another. I just want every player on the floor held to the same standard in those situations.

Teams like vcu get away with a lot because the refs have already determined "Oh, their style involves a lot of contact and if we called everything the game would have no rhythm" so they swallow the whistle rather than enforce the rules and establish that that style is not acceptable in the first place.

Players like Jenkins, who have already been determined to be "foul prone" get the opposite treatment. It sucks. Not saying he shouldn't be a more careful, disciplined player; ultimately he needs to recognize he gets called for everything and needs to be careful. I'm just looking at the flip side and saying if Jalen wasn't so aggressive and active, could we win as many games as we've won? When you're the only forward defending 2 forwards, I would rather see you play a little out of control and disrupt the other team. It's on Hewitt and a little on DP for not having quality backups ready to go for when he DOES get in foul trouble.

Sorry for the rambling post. Didn't even realize how passionate I was about this til I started typing.

I will start looking for this. Maybe I shouldn't though, I already have enough stress watching the games haha

You obviously haven't watched a lot of Bruiser Flint era Drexel or vcu games, have you?

Haha, true. I try not to think much about officiating because (a) I don't know half of what they know and (b) and makes the game less fun. But when you're a team at our level you play in a LOT of close games and one or two calls make a big difference. But like any homer, I always feel like everything is against us!

What I like so much about Moore is, he doesn't get rattled. Yes they sagged on him and he could have forced shots, but what he did was find his teammates and they hit shots. In the second half when Demby played off him he hit two huge midrange jumpers to give us the lead. His shot may be little unorthodox, but he does make it. I remember watching the Penn state, and Penn U, game and he hit at least 4-5 jumpers in each game. Thats when I realized Moore's midrange was pretty decent.

It's a scary-looking jumper (hitchy release, flat arc on the shot) and I get nervous every time he pulls up for a mid-range shot, but somehow he's made it work for him. Who cares if it looks pretty or not.
