It's more than that, rumor has it the veterans skip classes, don't show up on time for meetings, etc

#culturechange

You could tell even from the videos they
Released of practices that they were much too lax under the old coach.

This.

Coach Paulsen has handled it and the punishment was both sever and public. It is very disappointing that a Senior is pulling this, but it's being taken care of.

If you're coming here now and calling out players by name as sloppy & selfish and your evidence is "rumor has it" then maybe you should just step away from the computer a minute and reevaluate.

Thanks but I'll say whatever I want, if you don't like it hit the ignore button. We finally have a coach who isn't running the program like a 'Boys & Girls Club' and I applaud the weak links being weeded out. There's no question PH has regressed a ton over the last three years.

It's one thing if it's a freshman who screws up and needs some consequences. It's something else when you have a guy who's old enough to know better, but instead of acting like a leader on a team with a bunch of young players, he jacks around and gets suspended.

My first thought was how could a senior like Holloway mess up like this, particularly after Coach Paulsen said that they would put a team in the classroom that Mason Nation would be proud of. But, there have been several seniors who have messed up like this while I've been a season ticket holder. So, while we're disappointed, we should recognize that they are still young and incline to make poor decisions. And, Patrick Holloway certainly appears to be a young man who deserves our support.

Hopefully, this will be the last player with unexcused absences from class. But, if it happens again during the Paulsen era, I'm expecting the coach to impose a 6-game suspension for the first offense just as he's done in Patrick's case.

This sets quite a precedent across our entire athletic department. I hope athletes on every other team take notice that a senior on our highest profile team got this handed down for missing some classes. You'd imagine Brad will want consistency across all of our sports so it doesn't look like we're just picking on one.

You're assuming it's a first offense, when in actuality this might be the coach's last available option other than kicking him off the team.

In fact, I highly doubt that you are correct. In the vast majority of situations like this, there are several steps of less severe punishment imposed before the coach starts taking away games.

Bottom line: Guys know they need to go to class or else. That's not a bad thing.

Perhaps, you are correct and I'm not being objective because I've met Patrick and believe that he's a nice young man. But, I'm not aware that he's done anything prior to this to warrant disciplinary action so I will stand by my prior post.

Because he said hi to you at a meet and greet you don't agree with the suspension?

As someone who spent the better part of a decade covering a major D-I football program, let me assure you that guys get "disciplinary action" on a regular basis that never makes it out into the media.

I am fairly certain that the last thing DP wants is to suspend Pat or anyone else.

But when lesser punishments fail to achieve the desired effect, that leaves a coach with no choice unless he's not concerned with academic performance and is willing to look the other way.

That is clearly not the case with our current coach.

I agree with the suspension - see my original post:

"I appreciate Coach Paulsen's high standards and the imposing of a 6-game suspension. Although, I'm surprised by Tweeder's comment that Holloway was very close to being dismissed from the team."

Is the consequence going to work long term? Maybe PH has other issues going on. To me it sounds like its a first offense. Would they put his face on everything from promo's to midnight madness to new uniforms debuts if they thought he was going to be a problem? Would Brad send out pics of he and PH if he thought he was a bad seed? I've always thought PH was a good, respectful kid. Maybe he changed. Doubtful. I just think DP is nipping this in the bud sooner than later.

Yes, small children and the emotionally immature typically do say whatever they want.

This type of bickering takes place on this forum? In By George's short history partaking I have not seen this.

Although my twitter account (@bygeorgemason) would not suggest it, I was sad to hear about PH. I worked summer camps 2 seasons ago at Mason and watched Holloway come late to camp everyday because he was taking summer classes. It appeared to me that he worked hard in the classroom and also was one of the more engaged counselors at camp.

Now, that being said, I don't really care for his game. I thought this season he had a chance to hit open threes with a lot more emphasis to high ball screens leaving him wide open with help side defense sliding down to the block to cover the big man roll. This would benefit him because he is too short and his shot is too flat to get his shot off against contested A10 wing players and if he is left to create he really only has the running floater in his bag of tricks. 6 games is only 6 games though and hopefully it gives our young guys, Otis and Kameron, some time to develop and gel in non-conf games.

Although I'm critical of Holloway's skills, it's only because I set such high expectations for him as I followed him in high school. I hope he comes back and provides a much needed spark off the bench that I think we will desperately need from a guard.

I know I bring this up every time there is a rumor about a kid getting suspended because of skipping classes but I am going to do it again.

When I played football at Marshall, for the two years I was there, our attendance was always kept an extremely close eye on. When we first showed up for two-a-day practices, the first thing before anything else was mentioned was attendance. We knew that all of our instructors/professors were reported any tardy or absences to the AD and Head Coach immediately.

I cannot imagine how any sane person would skip classes and think they were going to get away with it. It is the one thing that there is zero percent chance of getting away with. You could kill someone, rob someone, smoke crack in your dorm room and you had a chance of getting away with, but not attendance.

So if the rumors are true, then this is an even bigger deal for Patrick’s personal future than we think. It shows a complete lack of judgement and poor decision making.
