GMU, Hewitt part ways

The only thing he MIGHT even allow them to negotiate is perhaps paying off his contract in 5 easy payments rather than one lump sum. If we can figure out a way to spread the buy out over a few years it would help with the financial burden. If we are paying him 150K/year over 5 years (or whatever the math would be) then it would be easier to hire a new staff and give the new head coach 450-500K because your overall cost doesn't increase.

That would be my play.

Devil's Advocate: If you're getting $700,000 why would you care what headlines say for a week when people outside of Fairfax don't care that much?

As some have said here, he appears defeated. Thus the AD has a tiny bit of leverage to say either negotiate a buyout that is either less cash for him, or same cash over a longer time frame. He put us in the cellar. He destroyed GT but gave them double the time to pay him. Prob for tax reasons, but I think Mason could benefit from a longer timed payout. We all just need this nightmare to end ASAP.

A good message to whom? The fan base? Any coach looking to step up would gladly accept 500K to coach Mason and not blink an eye. We'd have easily over 20+ QUALIFIED and legit candidates to choose from for that amount. Especially when it is explained to them the financial situation Mason would be under. If a coach is coming from a smaller conference or as an assistant is going to turn down the chance to coach in the A-10 because he has penis envy of the last coaches contract then I don't want him.

That's how the bucks are getting rid of the psychotic Larry Sanders!!!

Buddy of mine and Mason alum set this site up

I feel like this should have it's own thread and be a sticky so it doesn't move down. I'm really glad your friend took the initiative to start this.
If this can make it to ESPN chatter, that would be excellent publicity. I'm going to start posting it on all the game day "conversations" for George Mason on ESPN's website.

Only powerful if they have lots of loot. Having this posted to ESPN and having folks visit the site to see he's collected on $45 is not really making a statement...in fact, he looks to be out in left field all alone.

As Tom points out, Hewitt is not walking from that kind of money....not now that his coaching career, of any notable nature or salary is over.

I wouldn't either. That's the great things about these coaching contracts, unless you do something egregious, the cash register rings, even in bad times.

What I would try as AD is yep, you're no longer coach, were paying you 700k, report to janitorial services for the next year. And see if negotiation can't be had on the buyout....

Unfortunately, the contract has no provision that would allow the school to reassign Coach Hewitt - see http://www.nycbuckets.com/contracts/PaulHewitt-GeorgeMason.pdf.

What a disaster. 9 of 10 mason hoops posters would have made a better hire and signed the new coach to a more sensible contract.

It's like watching college players brick free throws. I can't help thinking "I could do a better job than that."
