GMU, Hewitt part ways

I thought the "Hewitt's Mom" donation was hilarious. At least that person put a little bit of money where his or her mouth is and did it with some humor. If we can't do things because someone, somewhere on the planet may have had some sorrow in the last two years, there will be little to no comedy on this planet.

From those with little sense of humor, the do nothing crowd that criticizes any attempt at a replace Hewitt movement, apathy towards trying to make sure the AD knows where we stand and the clueless fans that still don't see it is Hewitt, I have come to the sad conclusion that our fan base does not deserve a new coach (the players do...).

I am not sure what is actually in it for the AD to stick it's neck out to replace him. If Hewitt gets replaced at the end of season, it will be pure luck.

Include me on the list whose mother died recently and do not find it "hilarious". Nor, should anyone be impressed with using the name of alumni association without its permission. If the school needs money to terminate Hewitt's contract, then the fundraising effort should be planned and coordinated in a legal and proper manner.

My mother died recently too, but I don't come on here looking for sympathy and I don't expect all jokes involving a mother to end as well. The self importance of some people is amazing...

If I recall the site correctly (can't see it any more since the gestapo had it taken down..) it did not pretend to be representing the alumni association. It clearly stated that it was setup by that individual and the donations were going to the Alumni Association. It was not a perfect implementation, but I applaud him for his efforts.

I wish we had more fans like him.

Even if inappropriate (which is arguable) The fact remains that a fan took the bull by the horns and did something. That in itself should be applauded.

I too thought the Hewitt's Mom donation was funny. Did Hewitt's mom recently die or something and that is why some have their panties in a wad?

The site was clearly representing that the funds were going to a certified charity, i.e., the alumni association. This was certainly an improper representation given that these were neither charitable contributions for educational purposes, nor funds solicited by the alumni association. Frankly, I can't understand your logic.

As I said, if fundraising for the purpose of terminating Hewitt's contract is initiated, then it should be done legally and properly.

My mom is alive and I thought it was sort of dumb, though wasn't offended by it. Funnier aliases in my opinion would have been:

  • J. Larranaga
  • E. Copes
  • T. O'Connor
  • B. Edwards
  • S. Cherry

Maybe the guy was thinking that Hewitt's Mom was upset that her baby was taking all that abuse and therefore she is contributing to her little Pauly's early retirement.

But, I agree, J. Larranaga would have been better.

Bottom line here is none of this is good. All Hewitts fault.

Pablo being purposely dense again just to make an argument... Well, I am giving you the credit for doing it on purpose since you seem to be able follow things easily elsewhere on here. If you are actually that dense, I apologize.

So to recap, no one can crack jokes involving moms because Pablo and Tom have lost a mother. Have you guys had any other tragedy recently that would make it inappropriate for anyone else in the world to crack jokes about?

The logic is this, and I'll connect the dots real slow for you. A fan wanted to do something to help ensure Hewitt gets canned this year. He wanted to raise money to help make it happen. Seems very logical since that is likely the only potential hurdle. People would hesitate to give directly to that guy personally. It would take too much time to setup a separate charitable organization for this purpose (time to replace him would have passed by the time it was setup) so he wanted it to be clear it was going to the school, so he chose the Alumni Association as the destination for the collected funds (not the best choice). He wrote a paragraph or two explaining his (not the school's) intentions and provided the identifying information of the receiving organization so people knew where the money was going. I had no problem discerning what was going on from what he put together. It was clear to me that he was not trying to represent the school, just trying to encourage people to give to the Alumni Association.

So, you have never encouraged someone else to give to the Patriot Club? That is essentially what he was doing, is encouraging people to give to the school to offset what it would cost if they fired Hewitt.

Given your overreaction as well as the schools (I am assuming he was strongly encouraged to take it down with some veiled threats of legal action) , I return to my earlier point. Most of our fan base, unfortunately, does not deserve to have Hewitt replaced early.

wijg,

Allow me to explain the appropriate process as clearly as possible. If the school administration needs the funds to buy out the remaining year of Hewitt's contract, then it needs to convey this to the people who have the resources, expertise, and commitment to make it happen legally and properly.

I'm sure that many of us would contribute to this effort. But, it must be done properly. At this point, I'm unaware that the school administration has conveyed the need to raise funds for this purpose.

Just to be clear, I also thought mother jokes were lame before my mother passed. As for what people are doing to make their feelings known, God bless 'em. I'm all for donation sites, booing at games, pissing on Hewitt's picture or even you lighting yourself on fire tomorrow and running to center court. I'd rather people be proactive than have no reaction at all, which pretty much describes 95% of our fan base.

The only thing I have disagreed with is those who say they are going to stop donating as a protest, not because it's not their right to do so but because I think it hurts more than it helps. I certainly get why fans don't want to spend money for this crap, and I'm certainly in that boat as well. But we'll never get our program back on track if we can't pay to get his a** out of there and bring in a new coach, and to do that we need a lot of money.

You know as well as I do that Mason would never do that. I have it on good authority that the only reason he was not replaced after last year was finances. So, the only reason not to do it this year would be finances because he sure has done a lot better...

Mason would never say they don't have the money, either. So, you have created a nice catch 22. The school will never do something along those lines, and the fans can't either. Ah, you must be the leader of the do nothing crowd...

If Hewitt is canned while the season is still going (long shot, I know, but...) we should start a "Thank You Ed-Wards (clap, clap, clap clap clap)" chant at some point in the game, perhaps after tip off and the band stops. Just a thought.

I think you are being shortsighted and/or don't understand human nature. If the school gets the same amount of money even while making bad decisions (or doesn't make good ones) they will never change their behavior. I don't know of anyone who has stopped or plans to stop donating that has said they won't start doing so when Hewitt is gone. It is basically telling the school they will pay them to replace Hewitt. I applaud those that do it, and I will be one of them this coming year if he is not gone. That will only further the chances he is gone sooner, rather than later.

Actually, I don't know what Mason will do or not do. I'm just telling you what needs to be done.

speaking of money, how much was athletic dept funding increased in relation to the increased growth of enrollment? In addition, where did the 6 or 7 million or more dollars go that was earned from tourney units over the past decade. Im prob wrong, but i feel like our budget doesnt reflect ncaa tourney checks, but increased student fees from increased enrollment and lobbying. Thus, where is the tourney cash?

In 2006, Mason spent $12.6M on athletics. In 2013, they spent $22.1M.
