Fight through, work around, have a teammate give them a "window" to slip through. Captain Obvious if you know anything about the game.
when they tried to slip the screens the big lefty had layups every time. So what else should they have done since your plan didn't work?

I do want to caution against the doom and gloom a little bit. This team lost two incredibly important starters from last season and are relying on a lot of inexperienced players.

Think of the 2009-2010 GMU team, which had just 1 senior and essentially started 2 juniors and 3 sophomores for most of the season (after Coach L finally decided to stop playing Louis Birdsong out of position). That team went 6-6 in the OOC and finished 17-15 and got blown out in a few inexplicable games (lost to Radford by 27, lost to GW by 17, lost to Northeastern by 25).

The next season pretty much the same team had the longest winning streak in the country and finished the regular season ranked 25 in the country.

Here was the thing with that team, they had 9 underclassmen and only the 3 upperclassmen so there was depth. We knew that team would be up and down, but the majority would be back for round 2.

This team only has 8 players. I too expect next year to be different since the same team is returning and itll be experienced. But they are going to be relying on a transfer up front and that all goes right everywhere else. Unfortunately I think the misses on Relvao, Temara, and even Newman not working out may have set this program back another year. Next year should be special, but I'm not sold that they are going to be that much better for round 2. Its early though and they suffered a bad loss so we'll see.

I'm curious why Kier and Boyd weren't penetrating in the open spaces either. I know Boyd did on one occasion and missed a wild layup and Kier missed a short jumpshot. Just seems like they couldnt adjust on the fly, and that does takes maturity.
Kier was he was just throwing up no look shots that went nowhere near the bottom of the hoop. He took one particularly ugly lefty floater that clanged in every direction but inside the cup

Pathetic 2nd half effort. But, as many have said, myself included, we are not capable of competing for 40 minutes. My friend and I could not comprehend the defensive philosophy tonight of switching so that Otis, at 5'9" ended up on Night at 6"9''more times than I care to remember. This loss is on Paulsen 100%.
This x10 very maddening. Pick and roll at the top of the key every time and we would switch a guard on their 6'10" guy every time. Calixte was doing a good job guarding him when he was in the game. I knew when we had a good first half that we would have a second half letdown, this team is just not yet capable of playing a full game. Otis again seemed to get run down in the end after a great game up to that point. Just going to be a long season with this short bench.

You still can’t even spell the guy’s name right, yet he would somehow be the savior of our team. Can’t believe how low you think of Paulsen. Ever think that recruiting is more complicated than just putting it all on the head coach? Don’t expect a turn around this quickly. It’s going to take some time to fix our program. We needed a total overhaul when DP got here. Not just players, but the facilities, gameday atmosphere, everything. Look at the big picture - we have come a long way in a little over 2 years.

Brad Edwards is kicking a**! Can he recruit?

We didnt get outscored by 17 until there was about 15 minutes left (i could be off by a few minutes). The lead went down to five and then back up to 10 to match the halftime lead somewhere around 15....then the implossion began.

If we insist on playing man defense, we can't use the starting lineup we've been going with so far. At this point, I'd go with Otis, Grayer, Kier, Mar and Calixte. Lets see what Calixte can do with more minutes. Its better than seeing one of our guards trying to front a 6-7 player in the post. At this point, whats the risk?

Or, change up the defense once in a while like we did against Northridge. Not sure why we did in that game, due to #4 killing us, but didnt make any adjustments tonight when #13 was killing us down low.

No you said they should have tried to slip the screens. They did about 4 times and let up 3 baskets. The fourth was a horrible layup by Pierce that hit the side of the backboard.
Can't argue with someone who doesn't understand what I'm trying to say.

It looked to me that Boyd got benched. Boyd made a couple of nice plays on offense, but mostly was a little soft tonight at times. Played only 13 minutes and out most of the first half due to fouls. Wasn't his night at all!

Greene had a chance to keep us in the game, but missed a key three-point attempt behind a great screen—gotta make those, Freshman.

We were stuck on 68 for 4½ minutes to end the game. Bad time to go ice cold. But, when your legs are gone you can't shoot. This eight-man roster's gonna be the devil all season, especially if a usual key contributor, like Boyd, gets benched. And...

...Kier, we need you to come back Kier—1 for 6 tonight. Some shots he missed badly, others just didn't fall. You could see in his body language that he was completely frustrated with himself. I
have confidence that he'll bounce back, hopefully very soon.

W&M is a well-coached team with all the right pieces. I've always liked Shaver. Could this be their year to make the NCAA Tourney?

Was in class and didn't catch the game so maybe I'm out of line with this, but I think it's time to drop Kier and Boyd from the starting lineup for a game. Some people need a fire lit under their a**, and Kier kind of looks like one of them. He's started pretty much every game he's been here and some anger might do him some good. Even if it's the football type "out for the first series, in for the rest of the game." Just let them all know they've got to earn in day in day out.

W&M entered the game as the No. 1 three-point shooting team in the nation. Imagine the howls of anguish here if we had played our usual packed-in defense and they made 20 threes.

We’re simply not good enough on defense to take away the paint and the 3-point line at the same time. Dave had the guys pushed out to defend the 3 and that opened the paint for Knight. Pick your poison.

He's already been losing a ton of minutes to Greene, that should have the fire lit in him already. I do miss the Kier of the first couple games this season for sure.
