Didn’t see the whole game, but did wonder about the switching on D. Been mulling it over all day - here is a theory.

DP looked at W&Ms biggest strength - shooting the 3 and decided to reduce open looks by switching. Hedging opens opportunities for good shooters and is weak against the pick and pop. Perhaps in W&M scouting reports they excel on beating a hedge.

Assume he felt he would continue to double down low when the roller had the ball and decided to take that risk rather than allow W&M to play to their strength.

It didn’t work, and just my theory but it is plausible.

He brought in a transfer. Unfortunately these annoying NCAA eligibility rules are standing in the way of him playing this season.

True - it's been asked before, but I wonder if he would consider a grad transfer? I should been a little more specific. Honestly, I just wanted an additional big that could come in and contribute some right away. A kid out of high school could've fit the bill too.

Regarding Herring. Uh, what?

I don’t even agree with Evans either, but Herring a “strong NBA prospect(s)”? Wow...
Yes, Erik Herring attending the Chicago Bulls training camp qualifies him as a pretty strong prospect. Remember, there was no "G League" back then.

Evans also received a lot of NBA interest, but passed due to his age.

If it's semantics that you're not understanding then I'll define a prospect: A player with potential to make a team's roster. A player that a team wants to take a closer look at to determine if that player is worthy of a roster position.

Just because Evans and Herring failed to make an NBA team doesn't discount the fact they were strong prospects. Go back and read the Washington Post of the era.

We'll, they say newspapers are written at a sixth grade reading level!

Most 6th graders are 12 years old... unless you're held back a grade.

..... Please explain to me what he has done for Mason that is so great

First of all, we won 20 games last year and were .500 in the league which exceeded the expectations of most of us loyal fans. In some ways, I think fans were hoping that we would be able to make even more progress this year. BUT WE LOST TWO OF OUR THREE MOST VALUABLE PLAYERS.

Also, you seem to be ignoring completely the progression in the play of some of the players he inherited. Shevon was a project when he arrived and, although he still had limitations, was a much better player when he left. Marquis turned a huge corner in his senior year, going from a journeyman player to a double-double machine. Who would have believed that going into last year?! Similarly Jalen was finally being used properly and although still a bit undersized, was an effective "big" man.

Both Otis and Jaire are currently playing at a high level and even our freshmen bench players, particularly Calixte and Greene are showing progress after a very slow start.

After years of our teams showing no progress under Hewitt, there is good reason to believe that DP is the sort of coach who knows how to develop talent. Have you no sense of perspective? Do you remember how disorganized the team seemed to be just a few years ago?

Dp is terrible. He has done absolutely zero to improve basketball here.

Dp is a failure so far here and has not accomplished anything at Mason yet. He has done absolutely zero to improve basketball here. The goal here is NCAA wins not being 500. He needs to be on the hot seat now.

He only watches 1 game a year so no, he doesn't remember how it was a few years ago.

Win, lose, I still think the program is going in the right direction. This will be a letdown after 20 wins last year but I am excited to see our young players get experience and next season, the incoming class plus Reuter will give us the depth to be more competitive

BUT WE LOST TWO OF OUR THREE MOST VALUABLE PLAYERS.

How in the world did DP land Otis and Grayer? Grayer could have brought his talents to Robert Morris or DePaul.... Otis could have played for Fairleigh Dickinson...

Sometimes you will find Diamonds in the rough, but more often than not, these players with no offers have no offers for a reason. This is not the patriot league anymore. DP needs to go after valuable players like Jenkins and Moore.

Jenkins had offers from Providence and Marquette. Moore had interest from Providence and UConn after Cassara was let go from Hofstra.

I was excited to see DP picked up Mar; he needs to add more high-level talent or go back to the Patriot League.

That is correct, no "G League" or "D League" back then, but it's more likely that EH was brought in as a body for workouts and, most importantly, he was from Chicago area I believe, so they were throwing a local a bone, not as a player "with potential to make a team's roster". I don't think he was even All-CAA 1st team during his time at G Mas.

I really hope that the program starts winning a few games this year so that things quiet down. Things always get nutty after a bad loss around these parts. :bricks:
Alrighty-then... If the screamers on Masonhoops would attend games at EBA then they could channel their energy in the right direction—we need these screamers to help the rest of us get Chic-Fil-A every game. C'-mon, I'm unemployed and I could use all the free meals that I can get!
