Game 8: AT University of Northern Iowa, Wednesday, November 30th, 8 PM, ESPN3

Justin Kier played 34 minutes, scored 9 points, and was 7-9 from the free throw line, including some clutch ones down the stretch. Dave Paulsen got a great player in Kier. Imagine the things he will do when he's a senior.

On a side note, DeAndre Abram still did not play today. How many games is that now?

"CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The George Mason University Patriots scored a 54-50 win over the University of Northern Iowa men's basketball squad Wednesday in the McLeod Center.

Mason (5-3 overall) limited UNI (3-3 overall) to 25.9 percent shooting from the floor and enjoyed a 53-29 advantage on the boards. Mason's Jaire Grayer, the son of former Iowa State Cyclone Jeff Grayer, led the Patriots with 14 points. Mason's Marquise Moore grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds."

"The Patriots refused to surrender and took their first lead of the second half at 48-47 with 1:49 left on a basket by Otis Livingston II. Mason drained all six of its free throws in the final minute to clinch the four-point road win."

"NOTES: UNI suffered only its second loss in the month of November in the McLeod Center ... UNI is 26-2 in the month of November in the McLeod Center since the building opened in 2006."

That was a quality win, I never expected UNI to play that badly. They did a nice job shutting Moore down offensively (as must have been their gameplan) but we obliterated them on the glass. That's a very good signs for us going forward if we can rebound as a unit like that.

"'This was a gritty win by our team tonight,' head coach Dave Paulsen said. 'Northern Iowa plays exceptionally well in this building. It wasn't always pretty, but to compete and fight like we did shows maturity. I thought our team grew tonight.'"

"Freshman Justin Kier chipped in nine points and seven rebounds, while making a number of key free throws down the stretch. He hit 6-of-6 free throw attempts in the final four minutes, with two of those trips coming in a 1-and-1 situation."

How could JMU fail to offer Justin Kier a scholarship?

I liked what Revalo did. he was battling every minute he played. some terrific rebounds. very encouraging.

Marquis is amazing, how can a guard grab rebounds like he is. he is fearless.

Overall we played sloppy but fought to the end. Best win of the season.

I was also impressed by our backup centers last night. Temara had two nice baskets, Relvao was big on the glass and bodying some of the weaker Northern Iowa bigs. He finally looked like many of you "insiders" described his practice play.

Huge momentum shift for the program. Really needed this one for the fan base and I hope our fans reward the team by showing up Saturday. No excuse not to have solid attendance for a weekend non holiday home game.

Hard to find a ton of positives but I really liked what Revalo did while he was in the game. He's the type of player that wont fill a stat sheet but can do the little things to win. Grayer was really cold but got hot at the right time, really clutch. Kier showed he can handle pressure too by sinking some crucial FTs. Otis was Otis, did everything pretty well, kinda wish he shot a little more.

4 in a row. Ugly wins but wins! Shows that we have lots if things to work on but even when the shots aren't falling or the defense lapses, we find a way to eek out a win. We may surprise some folks as the season progresses.

Great team win. Wasn't pretty but they all put in a huge effort on the glass and did the little things that were good enough to win. Whether it was a defensive stop, huge rebound or hitting free throws, they showed maturity tonight which was a really nice step.

As far as Kam, Deandre and Danny go, I suspect that they aren't performing as well in practice like Paulsen said but also I think they may have just been recruited over. When they were recruited, Mason needed some bodies for the team and now that Mason has a full roster, Paulsen sees more potential in the guys hes playing in what he is trying to do. Minutes may be tough for these three to come by as long as the freshmen continue to impress and progress. I hope they continue to work hard and hopefully they can find some minutes to help the team going forward.
