Got back to my hotel room here in NYC and caught the last three minutes on my laptop. After looking at the stats, I feel fortunate I didn't have to endure the first 37 minutes like you guys.

Honestly, though, I couldn't care less how badly UNI played or how ugly this victory was. Our young team still had to travel to a tough arena and scratch out a win. Add another brick to the foundation, fellas.

Ugly wins are good for the team... Build confidence without inspiring over-confidence. Or, that's what I tell myself.

Yikes...

It's a lot better to teach after a win than after a loss -- and there were a ton of teaching moments that came out of this game.

Fabulous job on the boards, + 23 rebound margin.
Very nice FT shooting in the last minute.
Too many TO's and too many open looks for UNI when Mason doubled the post.

You take the win, get back to work in practice tomorrow and look forward to a solid Mercer team on Saturday. All in all, nice character win for a young team.

This is a "hope like hell I'm wrong" prediction but I think UNI waxes us:

- They're very stingy defensively and we've struggled to score against the only good defensive teams we've faced.
- Almost half their shots are threes, and they're shooting 40%. We don't defend the perimeter very well, though this may improve depending on who gets playing time (eyes on Boyd and Kier).
- They don't put their opponents on the line too much. One of our biggest advantages game to game is that we shoot a bunch of free throws.
- They force more turnovers than we do (who doesn't?), but they also turn the ball over at a higher rate.
- They give up a lot of offensive rebounds and we're a very good offensive rebounding team, so this is potentially something that works in our favor.

Something to note is their opponents have taken 40% of their shots from deep. I haven't watched them play, but if their strategy is to pack the paint and make us shoot over it, it's probably a long night for us.

To compete, we'll need a big night from Marquise at the line and crashing the boards, and we'll need to get hot from distance. The more likely scenario is that they start hitting threes, we struggle to hit anything per usual, and we're behind the entire second half.

I agree with this analysis. Both Morgan and Carlson shoot 3's at a > 45% rate and as already indicated above, UNI get almost half their points from 3's. And for whatever it's worth, Kenpom gives each of those guys very high offensive efficiency ratings (122.1 and 118.9, respectively). Jalen is our best on that scale (116.6, ranked 475 nationally).

Well, well----I guess Petey and I nailed this one!!!!

And so much for Kenpom. Actually one thing we're pretty good at is that the teams we play don't shoot 3's very well. I was attributing that to the poor quality of the teams we played earlier, but now.........? Maybe we've been so blinded by how poorly we shoot 3's, that we've overlooked how badly our opponents have been (although granted, not as poorly as we do).

4 in a row, 2 games over .500 and with a little bit of luck, we might have beaten MSM and Towson! And tonight we didn't get anything out of Jenkins who had our highest offensive efficiency rating!

+23 on the boards for a team that at times had Ian Boyd at center is ridiculous. That's pretty much 100% the reason we won. Great, great effort.

I missed the entire game, because ESPN decided to constantly crash my java and no updating or switching browsers seemed to work.

Anyway, focus on the positives: Mason forced UNI to take 32 3s and held them to 25% shooting from distance (maybe someone else who watched the game can tell me if that was a product of good defense or just luck on our part -- but considering they only made 7 shots inside the arc, I'm going to guess it was good defense.

This is a win to hopefully build on. If the defense clicks, we'll stay in games even if we shoot like crap because our guards rebound like crazy.

A complete team effort tonight. Wasn't pretty but the progression of such a young team is happening quickly. Not an easy place to win and they showed a lot of maturity to be able to pull a game like this out.

Still might be a rocky at points ,but the team is well on their way.

Guards rebounding like that is incredible. Effort effort effort.
