Happy to get the win, but this was ugly. A four guard lineup should carve up a team that starts two unskilled bigs and plays a 1-2-2.
Some positives:
- Ian Boyd is a manchild. Pretty sure Dave had him play in crunch time because JMU stuck with a big lineup and Kier/Newman couldn't hang. Boyd was guarding 4s and rebounding in traffic like he's six inches taller than he actually is. He's already a very good defender and should get more minutes if he can get to the line as much as he did tonight.
- Karmari appears to have found his shot. If he can come off the bench and knock down some 3s for us he'll carve out a nice role for himself this season.
- Temara's game looks bad on the stat sheet but I liked a lot of what I saw from him. Footwork in the post was decent and he got himself a few good looks that just didn't go down. His help defense is a little slow but hopefully he learns as much from Jalen this season as he possibly can.
Things I didn't like:
- Otis is falling in love with his stepback a little too much. It's great to have as a safety valve when the shotclock is winding down, but he tried it a couple times with plenty of time left to get a better shot.
- Kier needs to speed up his release on his 3s. Looks like he's aiming his shot. Even if he's not, it takes him way too long to get the ball away.
- I don't know how safe Jaire's role is. He's inefficient as a scorer and leaky as a defender, and it doesn't look like he's improved much since last year. Like Deandre, if you ask what he gives us that the new guys don't, I don't think there's a lot there.
- Really poor execution on a couple plays. The worst was the shot clock violation out of a timeout at the end of regulation I think. Not sure how that happens.
Love that the team keeps fighting and we got the win, but there's still a lot of work to do.
