GIVING DAY 2023
I only saw half the game, but more of the same. Clueless on offense, too many defensive lapses. Other than the brief run in the second half it would be a terrible drive to the basket or a chucked three. No rhythm or flow to offense.

Amazing how they go from one extreme to the other from half to half. I expect that from a young team but not an experienced squad. It’s very mysterious how your senior point guard and prized sophomore also have disappeared once again.

For those clamoring for JDS, I’m sure If the staff thought he could help he’d play at this point.

Disappointing and embarassing because a team built like this should be able to play bigger programs close at this stage.

I have no idea what to expect in league play but neither does anyone else most likely from any other program...

That was a garbage public showing. I wonder what Brad Edwards is thinking. We got our donation base back to our final four years and this Paulsen guy is about to tank it all. A move is needed mid season if this keeps up to try to save our donation base. I know I'll be pulling all my money is this crap continues.

Pressure was off, game was over.

Maybe that will help? Who knows.

You would wonder with a team that managed to shoot worse than us long range why they wouldn’t just pack the paint and force the other team to shoot over them (although the team played some good defense at the end of the first half only to give up offensive rebounds and put backs).

This team is so frustrating because no matter what they do they can’t sustain it for a few possessions and then the wheels fall off. It’s a totally bizarre regression.

Great time at the pregame spot with 10-15 mason fans

Cincy not that good. Really cannot shoot but drove past us at will per usual

God save Reuter

Otis needs to put up or shut up

Javon can drive but can’t shoot

Paulsen is absolutely clueless in rotations

Mason fans were louder than cincy fans by far.

Cincy isn't that great and yet we were still overmatched.

After it was said that we were the only team in the country to return 100% of our offense from last year, Lappas responded with something like, "but they weren't very good on offense last year". The one smart thing he said all night.

At what point do we try something different on both ends of the floor? Our offense doesnt work and our man-to-man defense is a mess.

100% agree. It’s clearly broken but there seems to be zero adjustments or changes being made to fix it. They can’t keep doing what they’re doing and expect it to magically get better. Why not try something different? I truly don’t get it. If they were CLOSE, it’d be a different story. But this team isn’t close to being consistently competitive.

Everything has to change immediately. We are currently terrible, so not much to lose.

If I see Mar or Grayer try to dribble in the lane and bounce the ball off their foot one more time I might not survive this season.

sometimes our guys, not just mar and grayer, don’t even hit their foot...

Better get the defibrillator ready, you could be on life support by the end of the day.

Can’t remember feeling more disappointed after six games of a Mason basketball season. It’s not even the execution necessarily — the effort and intensity has been so inconsistent. That’s inexcusable from a veteran team.

I wanna see some grilling of the coach at these pressers. Who the hell gonna ask some tough questions?

What would Coach L do?

Maybe he squeezed too much, too early, out of Otis. He is the main let down, but I cant say I'm surprised since he had to carry the program on his shoulders (grayer was hurt or disappeared) last 3 years. Maybe he is just burnt out. Probably bc his burst is gone.

Time for sports shrink.

I have a feeling DP burns everyone out in practice. Old school style coach.

Otis’ struggles are mystifying, but more broadly, it feels like the entire team doesn’t understand how hard they need to play for 40 minutes to be successful. I’m scratching my head after watching these guys scratch and claw for everything they got last season.

If we were a skilled team like Gonzaga, which almost always has five guys on the floor who can shoot, pass and dribble, it wouldn’t be as necessary to play with maximum intensity. We would just carve teams up with superior execution.

That obviously isn’t the case.

Just watching vcu a couple times this season, they’re not very skilled and struggle shooting the ball, but they get after people for the full 40 minutes. They’re not out there to be nice. They play with an aggressive mindset that isn’t predicated on making baskets.

Now that we have a full roster, more or less, there is no excuse for our guys to play with inconsistent intensity and aggressiveness. Empty the tank, then sub out and recharge on the bench. Next guy up.

They need to get back to a blue-collar mindset and start being more physical — particularly on defense — instead of playing as if they’re carrying fine china and don’t want to break it. We’re simply not good enough to win pretty.

That's the dumbest suggestion. Dean Smith didn't burn anyone out. He had a system and recruited for it.
