GIVING DAY 2023
Team has exceeded expectations by a lot this season playing guys like Boyd, Kier, Newman, (and Javon Greene) and you think one or two of them is going to play less minutes in favor of Relvao and a redshirt freshmen? Hoping this is as wrong as your prediction that Danny Dixon would be a starter this season...
I wasn't aware that Boyd, Kier or Newman played center.. although I wouldn't put it past Boyd...

Or power forward for that matter. If I had to guess next season, Kier is going to move over to the 2, Grayer will start at the 3 and there's going to be an open competition at the 4 and 5 spots.

You understand the roster is changing very little over the next two years? So Paulsen is going to approach next season completely different because??????

Huh? Have you watched this season at all? It's 2017 positions titles are meaningless. You think Boyd and Newman aren't play more minutes next season because there's G next to the name on the roster instead of F or C?

You understand that Paulsen will have the OPTION of taking a different approach next year because unlike this year, he will have two prototypical 4s that can defend that position more naturally than Boyd or Grayer? Both Mar and Wilson have the chance to develop into elite defenders, in addition to what they can offer on the offensive end. Their length, coupled with their defensive ability isn't something we currently have available on the roster.

...because Paulsen will have a new roster of players. He's losing his MM and JJ so our starting 2 and 5 which will create a void at those positions and we will either shift existing players to fill those holes or use our 3 new freshmen. I pray that Paulsen changes his approach every year based on the skill set of his roster.

Dave has proven in his first 2 years at Mason that he will adjust his approach to suit the composition of the team.

I would expect Mar or Wilson to start at the 4 unless they're just clearly not ready. Having that length and versatility in two 6-7 guys who are known for their defense will give our team something it doesn't have this season.

I see Kier starting with Otis and Jaire because he's effectively a second PG and can take the playmaking load off Otis, but Boyd or Newman could break into the lineup with a big offseason.

Regardless the talent level will be much higher and deeper, and all of our players will benefit from increased competition at practice.

So two freshmen are going to start over despite all the minutes our freshmen and sophomores are playing this year.... OK boss.

Oh wait, they have SIZE!

I guess you haven't noticed, but our coach has no problem starting a freshman if he's the best man for the job.

Kier came in and took away a starting spot that almost everyone (myself included) assumed would belong to Abram.

Both Mar and Wilson were recruited initially for their defense. Defending the 4 spot has pretty obviously been the weakest part of our team this season.

The fact that both of those guys are 6-7 with long wingspans is just a bonus.

I am not sure why we are obsessed with classifying them as strictly 4's. Goanar Mar is not a four in high school and Wilson was more of a 5 in high school. We do not need to start two big men next year unless it is both Mar and WIlson. Run 4 guards and Wilson against teams that don't have big men (most teams we play)

Both Mar and Wilson are way too skinny right now to play the 5 even in a guards league like the A-10.

We would get absolutely abused in the paint by most teams if we ran a 4-guard system with either of them at the 5.

We just have a complete difference in why body size matters. Unless we play against Holloway from UMASS, what other big man has abused us this year that we would play again next year? No problem by me starting someone better when the other team doesn't have a Holloway sized player

I could see Otis (lock), Jaire (close to a lock), Kier, Boyd, Temera, Mar, and Wilson all being in the discussion.

But I trust whatever DP comes up with. He's seen them play one or two minutes more than any of us have. :superhappy:

I mean hes only going to come up with whats discussed here so based on that, we'll have the following

Otis
Kier
Abram
Wilson
Mar

three 6'7 guys with size:chuckle:

In all seriousness, I do trust what DP will come up with, I expect a lot of Mar/Wilson with Temara and Relvao, with a mix of 4 guards and Temara/Relvao, similar to what we do now. Mar and Wilson will probably have a learning curve for the first few games at minimum. Just depends on matchups and what scheme the team is using.

I doubt the future of college basketball is going to be five guards, but the days of three perimeter players and two post players in the paint are over.

I don't see Abram, Kam, or Dixon getting much time. Although, I think Kam is good on the defensive end, and Abram is good on the offensive end (minus the passing).
