We had a stylish coach not so long ago. He sucked.

I don't care what Dave looks like on the sideline as long as he stays at Mason and wins a sh!t-ton of basketball games.

Not looking for suits! Looking for the man to be 100% comfortable while he "makes his magic"....and it's obvious shirt and tie is not it......

I swear he seems like a polo and warm up pants kind of guy.

I, for one, find the messed up collar and tie to be iconic. It is totally Paulsen's thing. There it is at Mason, Bucknell, and Williams. The man is 52 years old, I think he knows what he wants to wear when he coaches. I really want shirts that replicate it to have a section of fans wear to a game.

It maybe iconic, but I have changed my mind.

Hawaiian shirt, bermudas, flip flops and sometimes a visor. Dump the plastic cups and give him a mug or a coconut to drink from.

WTH? Under the Virus teams had to make adjustments?
I thought they just scouted us and kicked our a**.

We were hard to scout (no real system in place), and often built up huge leads against opponents (CAA semi-finals against Northeastern in 2013, for instance). By the mid-point of the first half, though, the wheels would always begin to fall off -- or, in the last 2:00 minutes of games if we were still holding on to a lead (New Mexico in 2012 is a good example of that one).

By the way, thank god he blew that game against NU. I have no doubt we would have beaten JMU for the championship that year (we swept them in the regular season by double digits both times) and been stuck with Hewitt for longer.

Welcome to A10 Talk’s Top 14 Coach Countdown of the 2016-17 season. We like to rank the players of the A-10 each season, but we’d also like to take a look at the brains of the operations. Who were the best coaches of the 2016-17 season? Who were the worst? Our site voted and compiled a list based on last season alone. This list is representative of how well each coach performed in the 2016-17 season, not in his entire career. Today, we feature #5 Dave Paulsen.

Don't tell me they're going to put Wade over Paulsen last season. I also see they put Mooney over Paulsen, too, despite having lost to Paulsen twice.

I could at least make a case for Wade since vcu went 3-0 against us.

Far more egregious is Mooney, who lost to Mason twice and was never in contention for an at-large bid despite having the Player of the Year and the Rookie of the Year on his roster.

Mooney's dreadful record against Mason -- at our program's lowest point in the past two decades, mind you -- should permanently disqualify him from any coaching honors. Even Paul Hewitt stole his lunch money. Enough freaking said.

Agreed. You could make a case. But I think the only reason Wade won against us is more talent and more experience. It had nothing to do with coaching.

part of coaching is recruiting. Shaka sure made that an easy road. But then again, Hewitt was left a top 25 team.

All that said, I wish he stuck around long enough for Paulsen to kick his a**.

You mean Hewitt inherited? He left a 10 win team.

Well, to be fair to Hewitt's first season, Luke Hancock left and Andre Cornelius was suspended for the first 10 games of the season. And let's be honest, Luke was a huge reason why that team could have been top 25, especially considering we had no real point guard on the team.

Had Luke stuck around and Cornelius not been an idiot, I think even Hewitt would have looked like a genius that first season.

I have to disagree, the guy couldn't even draw up a inbounds play.
