I suspect that something had to happen because they tweeted 6 hours before they fired him about his Monday night talk show and they got rid of him mid season. But no, he didn’t work out at all.

At first blush, yes, but after he was forced out at UVA, he became a retread and now has to climb he ladder again. He was an assistant at RI for a short stint after that. Combine that with ODU spending so much on football and travel, it makes some logic.

I remember Paul Hewitt used to have to stand before the season ticket holders on a seemingly daily basis. Granted those got awkward near the bitter end but he did them.

I’d love shaka smart to come to mason. I’d definitely up my donation and many of my friends would have a lot of excitement.

But Dave is not being removed after this year. So unless Shaka stays another year I don’t see the match. I also don’t think Mason would pay what it costs to get him. He’d probably be closer to 7 or 8 hundred k, base.

I’m as annoyed as the next guy, and hiring Shaka would be a nice upgrade, but I don’t see it lining up to be possible.

If Mason was a “swing for the fences” kind of school, I could see Shaka being a great match. This is a program with an enormous amount of potential in an area he could recruit well and a league he’s familiar with. He’d be a grand slam and energize the program from Day 1.

Unfortunately, the timing is terrible. We don’t even have a permanent president. Zero point zero chance that a school that NEVER takes big swings in athletics is going to do it in this case.

From my understanding having sat on a Board of Governors meeting is that they have more power than a President or provost or anyone on campus. All they would need is 4-5 votes I believe. If THEY would want this (99.9% odds are they don’t care or don’t want) it could easily happen without a president.

Best case for #Shaka2Mason is he sits out a year to collect his thoughts and count his money, Mason hires a permanent president that is an ardent supporter of athletics, and we have a coaching vacancy after a meh 2020-21 season.
