It’s about relationships.

VA Beach would not be bad. Good talent down in that area. North Carolina as well. Chicago and Michigan are other areas that would be nice.

Paulsen seems to have NYC and that general area himself.
Michigan?! Not even a top 20 recruiting spot. You really do live in 1960 don’t you?

Tech has two and it will pay off. Too much talent in dmv to not do well recruiting here

The problem is we could have 100 coaches doing nothing but recruiting the DMV and we still couldn’t sign kids like Jeremy Roach or Anthony Harris. Those kids are still gonna end up going to Kentucky and North Carolina.

And we don’t need to devote that level of resources to get the type of kids who will consider Mason: Jordan Miller, Xavier Johnson, AJ Wilson, etc.

We need to have a strong recruiting presence in NYC/Boston/Pa and another in NC/SC/Georgia.

In addition to the DMV, these areas are where we’re gonna get most of our recruits.

Hot take:

I don’t care where our new assistants went to college, I want the best guys for the job. If Lamar is it, hire him... but I would be shocked if there weren’t more qualified coaches out there available. I’m loyal to Mason grads, but not at the expense of our program.

Fire away.
Do I remember correctly that Lamar was a Virus fan/defender to the very end?

If so, shouldn’t that alone be disqualifying?

Had I been born in the 50 or 60s, maybe I would remember what that decade was like?

But there's also plenty of talent to be had around Detroit, Chicago, Akron, Cincinnati -- the Midwest in other words. It would be hard for us to penetrate into Texas and/or California as a recruiting strategy (Hartwell aside).

But if you've got NYC, and the DMV, no reason why you wouldn't also maybe find someone with ties to the Midwest (Michigan, Illinois, Ohio), or the South (North Carolina, Georgia, Florida).

Or, hell, we can go Gonzaga's route and get an international guy and try to recruit the crap out of Europe or Australia or something.

There's lots of options.

Now Duane Simpkins is in the mix to be the next head coach at Howard, which had offered $700,000/yr to Karl Hobbs. Hobbs is supposedly now out of the picture.

Maryland assistant Kevin Broadus might be the favorite, but Simpkins’ name is being thrown around in connection with the job.

Losing all three of our assistants in one offseason — including our DMV recruiter — would be a nut punch.

You gotta take the cash. So hopefully DP has a plan.

If they take the Maryland assistant does Simpk leave for his alma mater?

Speaking of Alums heading back, Dorsett, Skinn and/or Butler all day!

DC to NYC. Beginning middle and end. You effectively recruit the DC, Baltimore, Philly (including South Jersey), and NYC (including North Jersey) metropolitan areas, you'll recruit well enough to succeed in the A10.

Paulsen lost all his coaching staff but at least he's at the Caps game tonight! Who needs a staff anyway?
As he should be allowed to do. Come on man, let’s be reasonable. You can’t seriously be upset that he is spending an evening at a sporting event. Let him enjoy his life from time to time. He’ll fill out his staff in time. Making the right hires is more important than making quick hires.

No inside scoop or knowledge...only a guess...

Paulsen used to coach Hofstra's old coach Mo Cassara.

I could see him hire Mo Cassara who has previously recruited NYC or GWs old coach Maurice Joseph who Paulsen seemed to like while coaching against him

His selection should be coming soon/if it hasn't already happened.

MoJo would be an inspired pick.

Why exactly? I think I like the guy more than most but his recruiting as an HC was terrible. GW had a garbage roster this year.

Not disagreeing entirely, just not sure what's on his resume in terms of recruiting as an assistant

We may disagree, but I don’t think the biggest problem with GW was recruiting. MoJo assembled some nice pieces (DJ Williams was especially a revelation) and had them in a bunch of games, they just couldn’t finish — and frankly, his tactical decisions left a lot to be desired.

He seems to have a good eye for talent and can connect with young men. Guys seemed to play hard for him even when their season was lost.

Plus, you wouldn’t have any sort of adjustment period because he already knows the A-10 and has recruiting contacts in many of the same places our staff looks for players.

He wouldn’t be my No. 1 choice but I think we could do a lot worse.
