Lurch is pretty cool. I talked to him at a show at the State Theatre 4-5 years ago and we were talking about Mason Bball which he followed pretty well.

Anyhow...the Junkees are way past their 15 minutes. No one cares about their show anymore. That is why their producers told them to do a TV show, Table Manners, in order to become relevant again in the public eye in DC.

Look at your gods now

The ratings (#45 in the country http://www.talkers.com/2014-talkers-sports-heavy-hundred-26-50/) longevity and popularity say otherwise but ok….whatever you think.

As a former radio guy--"Talkers" is a joke. Their rankings go like this:

Syndicated shows large to small (since they buy ads), sprinkled with major market personalities (Top 20 markets--of course their shows have audience), and then a sprinkling of others to make the list look balanced.

The same shows I saw in there 20 years ago...are still there.

Maybe, but it is still there. Ranking 45 in the nation isn't bad at all. Golf Digests hot list is always the same, and ranks the top clubs from big brands always the best but at the end of the day they are typically still tops and highly rated anyway.

Rankings will always have some sort of bias.

<----i replaced incompetence and luck with hard work and results ... hopefully.

I like the hire. I think it is savvy from a basketball and probably financial aspect. Plus anyone we hire can't do much worse than he who coached before.

<--- new fiery hot avi for me.

The more I read about this guy the more I like him. Won a D3 national title, 2x D3 National coach of the year, 2x Patriot League COY, recruited Mike Muscala, and went 113-54 over his last five years at Bucknell. Seems like a basketball lifer who earned his stripes every step of the way.

I don't want to get too far ahead of myself, but I really can't wait for the team to not suck soon.

So I watched some of his instructional video and some game footage, read some of his play book that was online, and am watching Miami play Temple. It seems like Paulsen and OCM run very similar game plans. This guy can truly teach subtly of the game.

And I bet part of the nuance of this hire....Edwards needed a guy in the mold of Larranaga....engaged to the school and the fans. Turner, Paulsen...not flashy, but solid...AND will be a part of the game plan to raise funds, work the crowd,

I could see Hewitt being aloof enough to think fans are a pain the A and doing anything but coaching was asking too much. But these two guys from the accounts...love their jobs, love where they coach and engage...like OCM.

Brad Edwards you sly dog you....

I was a little bit like, "A hire from the Patriot League? Bucknell? Another coach with "Paul" in his name (as mentioned in a previous post)."

Then I started thinking, who was Shaka Smart before vcu? Maybe Paulsen is a better hire than some coach who thinks he's holier-than-thou? Yeah, Paulsen coached in the Patriot League, but he coached near the top of it consistently. And the issue with having "Paul" in his name?: It's in his last name, not his first name as our previous two "Wonder-Pauls".

Welcome to Mason Coach Paulsen! Now hop the next train to Philly and go convince Ahmad Gilbert to stay put.

Bucknell's NCAA statistical rankings this season for games through 3/29/15 include:

3-pt. FG% - 33rd (38.5%)
Turnovers per game: 48th (11.1)
Assist/turnover ratio: 76th (1.18)
Rebound margin: 104th (2.1)
3-pt. FG's per game: 115th (6.9)
Turnover margin: 286th (-1.7)
3-pt. FG% defense: 300th (37.0%)
Steals per game: 338th (4.1)

Good offensive numbers, but YIKES! where's the defense? Gotta have strong D to win in the A10.

How were his defensive stats in past years? Pablo?

Don't be mislead by the rankings that I provided. Bucknell played fundamentally sound basketball both offensively & defensively. But, it's conservative basketball and not "havoc" defensively - thus the negative turnover margin and the low number of steals (note: the 3-pt. FG% defense was much better in prior seasons).

As I indicated in another thread, my concern is that he rarely plays any zone defense.

Virginia's defensive system is proof that you don't need to steal the ball as long as you can stay in front of your man, shut down penetration and make it all but impossible for the other team to get an unimpeded shot any closer than 25 feet from the basket.

I very much look forward to having a coach who can both teach guys how to play solid fundamental defense and motivate them to do so.

Putting guys on the bench for blown defensive assignments would be a nice start. In four years, I don't know if Bozo tried that even once ... he preferred to clap and offer the offending player a popsicle.

If that's the case, Holloway better transfer right now! ;)

In response to JDBison2010

"This is not real surprising. I thought Dave would be gone after 2013.

This is a very solid career move -- A-10, big market, good facilities, some tradition and name recognition.

And expect him to do well there. He will be able to get better athletes without Bucknell's academic restrictions. I'd expect teams better suited to matching up man to man with out of conference teams than he had at BU."

Another quote from Pablo's link:

[QUOTE="As Jay Bilas might say, George Mason isn't a good mid-major job, it's a great mid-major job. Someone said earlier that the institution's vision and, more importantly, funding is about competing at the top of the A10. When you look at those programs like vcu and Dayton, it has to be considered an exciting opportunity.

I guess what one can glean from this, it's all relative.
