Countdown to the End of the Coach Hewitt Era

So thank you Lamar for being true green. I and everyone else knows how frustrated you are about the state of our program, but must TRY very hard to stay somewhat objective, especially someone who understands the meaning of committment and determination, and by the way wants to keep his job. I sure as hell know I couldn't do it.

When I get frusrated and down, I go dig out my LB sports illustrated issue, it brings a smile to my face. it can never be taken away from us.Thanks bro for doing your part.

lets hope BE does what must be done and gets our pride back.

I said it in another thread and I'll say it again...I love Lamar, but he had high quality coaches in both high school and at Mason. Would things have worked out as well for him if this wasn't the case? I'm not sure, but I'd probably bet on no.

Will Senior Night not only be Corey Edwards' & Vaughn Gray's final home game, but will it also be Coach Hewitt's?

Effekt? Has our team dragged down the university to the point where we can't spell? I blame Hewitt or Obama. One or the other. Does it matter which one we blame?

Will Gray and Edwards start? No guarantee seniors start on senior night with this coach.

I've gone back and forth with Lamar several times on Twitter and I can tell you he honestly believes it's mostly the players -- specifically, their lack of commitment to working on their games outside of structured team activities.

Let me start by saying I've no knowledge of this one or the other, but that sounds plausible. I can't imagine it's easy to put the additional time above and beyond the typical grind of a D1 athlete after last season and the current one. I imagine morale is low and self-motivation is more difficult.

Not looking to make excuses for anyone, just stating that winning and hard work feed off each other, as does continuous losing and low motivation. Even as a fan, I find the level of effort I'm willing to go through to rearrange my schedule, seek out and make additional investments in being able to watch the Mason games has nose-dived since the start of the Paul-Ball II era to today.

I don't care how many screens you set...passes you make..."the execution" of the play. The player has to make the shot

Yeah, well, there's a difference between running a play that creates open looks and running one where one of your guys get frustrated and drives into 4 dudes and chucks up a prayer.

There was a play on sports center top ten today where a player for some directional school in alabama holds on to the ball near mid court until 4 seconds, dribbles around the top of the key, then chucks up a contested three at the buzzer that went in. I immediately pictured Hewitt just getting all wet and wishing he had recruited the kid; he would have fit perfectly into our "system."

I get the impression from Lamar's tweets that his system would not require a coach to be on the team. Five players on the court just making the shot.

That's kind of what you want from a players perspective. It certainly works in the NBA for the most part, where almost all 10 guys on the court are capable of creating their own shot or making shots that would be considered "bad" at most skill levels.

But there is a difference between running a system where you have the players to fit into it, and adjusting to cater to your player's abilities. I'll admit our guys could probably do more to work on their shot-making skills (I covered that a few pages back) but Hewitt is so inept at adjusting things on the floor that I don't really see him being the right kind of coach for players at this level.

I feel so sorry for the George Mason Horse. It's been dead for years and yet here we are, still beating it, daily.

Based on my experience as a sportswriter, I think you've just identified the inherent weakness most very good to great players (in any sport) have when attempting to transition into a coaching position -- they are, by virtue of their talent, unable to understand how difficult life is for mere mortals.

Lamar may not have been a "great" player overall, but he was one of the greatest shooters of the basketball walking the planet during his tenure at Mason.

Great shooters make shots even when the play breaks down, the screen isn't set well enough or the pass isn't right on the money. Great shooters make shots when they have two guys hanging all over them and they're fading away from 20 feet. Great shooters make shots, period.

But unless you have a team full of guys capable of creating and making their own shot -- which we obviously do not have -- you have to have a Plan B, C, D and so on. That's when you need coaching to put your players in the best possible position to succeed.

What Lamar doesn't seem to get is that we only have one guy on this team whose calling card is shooting the ball from distance. I don't care how hard the others work or don't work on their own, they're all limited in how effective they can be in a system that relies more on 1-on-1 isolation than creating high-percentage shots for others.

Hewitt recruited a team that is a poor fit for his offense. He was desperate to get longer and more athletic so we'd be better defensively in the A10, went overboard with a bunch of redundant 6-6/6-7 guys and wound up with a team that can't score. And yet, we're still running the same stupid offense and getting the same terrible results.

Bottom line, it's Hewitt's responsibility. His ego is writing checks that his players can't cash. He has to go.
