A10 Season Preview

"Saint Louis: It’s a tough to say a team is “on the rise” when it’s coming off a season where it won 23 games, but Saint Louis looks like a team that will go from being one of the best in the Atlantic 10 to one that could be the top non power conference team in the sport. Travis Ford brings back three all-conference players in Jordan Goodwin, Javonte Perkins, and Hasahn French; both Goodwin and French averaged a double-double last season. Six other players return who averaged double-figure minutes, including a pair of starting caliber wings — Gibson Jimerson and Fred Thatch — who only played a combined 16 games last year due to injuries. It’s not fair to expect the Billikens to do what Dayton did last season, but it’s important to remind people that Saint Louis was closer to beating the Flyers than any other team in the Atlantic 10 a year ago and it brings every single player back. I’ll say it again: this could be the best non power conference team in college basketball."

"15 college basketball playmakers who could be the nation's top point guard

10. Jacob Gilyard — Richmond, Senior

Katz has Richmond as one of his sleeper teams that could make a deep tournament run come March, and Jacob Gilyard has a lot to do with how successful the Spiders will be this season. The senior guard only stands at 5-foot-9, but he has put up some outstanding numbers during his career. He averaged 12.7 points, 3.2 steals and 5.7 assists last season.

13. Fatts Russell — Rhode Island, Senior

Fatts Russell is going to be a player to keep an eye on in the Atlantic 10 this season. The 5-foot-10 guard was Mr. Everything for the Rams last season, averaging 18.8 points, 4.6 assists and 2.9 steals per game. His speed and efficiency put him as the third-leading scorer in the A-10 last season.

14. Jalen Crutcher — Dayton, Senior

With no Obi Toppin, last season's Naismith Player of the Year, Jalen Crutcher will look to be the primary scorer for the Flyers this season. Even with Toppin in the lineup, Crutcher still put up solid numbers for Dayton last year, averaging 15.1 points and 4.9 assists per game. "

"UMass had a combined 412 assists to 407 turnovers as a team last season and addressed its point guard issue with the addition of Wichita State transfer Noah Fernandes and freshman Javohn Garcia.

McCall also returns two double-figure scorers on the wing in T.J. Weeks and Carl Pierre while veteran forwards Preston Santos and Dibaji Walker can do the dirty work. Freshman Ronnie DeGray is a high IQ addition and potential Glue Guy at 6-7 while fellow freshman Dyondre Dominguez should also be in the rotation.

The key for McCall is finding enough consistent options out of that group to take pressure off Mitchell, who averaged 22 points and 8.9 rebounds over the final 10 games of last season.

Even if that happens, there’s no guarantee that UMass will be able to climb the standings in what should be a loaded year in the Atlantic 10. Saint Louis, Richmond, Dayton, St. Bonaventure, Duquesne, and Rhode Island should all be postseason teams while Davidson and George Mason both have legitimate sleeper potential."

UMass just got hit with a two-year probation and a fine for impermissible benefits. Looks like someone in financial aid screwed up some residential allowance calculations.

Rothstein said something nice about us. The surest sign yet that 2020 is indeed The Apocalypse.

We have “sleeper” potential. I think it makes me even happier that he doesn’t mention vcu, seems like he loves that school.

He like everyone else probably knows it's a rebuilding year for them with the amount of youth they have. He will be gushing about them soon enough I'm sure. That said he probably knows that a full healthy Mason squad with seniors has a chance to win at least a few games.

Must be nice to have a donor willing and able to drop $15 million on the basketball program ... and all they had to do to get the money was not fire Mooney

Keeping tabs on Binghamton University stadium project underway down the street from me. $60 million project funded by donor.

Binghamton U. baseball ?!?!

I think I mentioned this when Binghamton announced the donation, but the AD and President asked the donor to spread the wealth around to other sports. He said it was 100% for baseball or they'd get nothing. They took the money, obviously.

Drove by yesterday. What had been the stadium has been completely torn down. All that remains from original stadium is field itself.

I wonder who made the donation? Can't be too many people in the world who are Binghamton U. baseball backers and stupid rich.

Oh...and I predict Mason basketball will finish 8th in the A-10 this year. A top 4 type team seems a ways away. Richmond turned things around quickly I suppose.

Yeah, it seems odd to give that much to a vanity project and then withhold your name from the donation. So, when are any of you going to become billionaires and donate eight figures for Mason basketball glory?

Billionaire Tom Tull is from near Binghamton. He is a sports fan...but seems like the type of guy who'd want his name attached to such a big donation.
