St. Joe's will be much better next season if all their injured players come back healthy. I would not be surprised at all to see them in the Top 4 and contending for an at-large. Martelli rebuilds in a hurry.

I don't see why St. Bona can't contend for the NCAAs with Adams and Mobley coming back.

Yep - Bonnies will be fine with those two back.

Dayton and vcu might have both gotten first round wins if they weren't paired with underseeded mid-majors. It would have been nice for the committee to have rewarded Illinois St. for their season even if it didn't win in the first round or maybe Monmouth?

That's kind of my point though - who should have gotten in over those ACC teams? No one really has a gripe for being left out this year.

Its the media hype that makes Acc seem better than it is. They got their 9 teams in. 8 of them were chewed up.

2018 - ?
Dayton - Maybe, my guess is they will be down next year losing Scoochie, Cooke and Pollard
RI - Yes, probably will be the favorite again
vcu - Nope, new coach, losing 5 seniors, big question mark
Mason - Nope, but maybe we have a pleasant surprise for next year? :superhappy:
Richmond - Nope, Losing Cline and Shawndre is huge
St Bon - Nope, will be NIT good but not ncaa good in my opinion
GW - Nope, added experience for the returning players probably offset the loss of Cavanaugh so again not ncaa good
who else has a chance? so we are looking at 1 at large and 1 auto bid for next year?

Pretty fair assessment, but I think ST Bono will be the team to beat.

Rice has a $5 billion endowment. If they thought Rhoades was worth it, they could have easily paid what vcu is offering. So why didn't they?

Rice could have matched vcu's money, but Houston will never be home for Rhoades and his family. Given the difference in program stature, infrastructure/resources and conference prestige, being able to get back to Richmond was icing on the cake.

It's better to beat them because we are better not because they have been knocked down.

They have so many advantages over us from a program perspective, it's a total mismatch.

Fortunately we once again have a coach capable of overcoming that disadvantage. By the time he's done at Mason, Dave is gonna make vcu and the rest of the A-10 long for those bygone Hewitt days.

He has recruited very well at Rice, which is a place that is very hard to get kids past admissions.

He will have no such problems at vcu.
This is true about recruiting.

fecesU will continue to be good . . . unless they don't. How many can't-miss coaching hires ended up, for whatever reason, not able to transfer success to another school? Too many to name.

WHOA- just catching up on things now. Can't believe ANOTHER vcu coach left. At some point this must become a problem for them...right?....right?? We lost 1 coach and it ended our entire everything.

It's crazy how stuck vcu is on Shaka Smarts coaching tree. Talk about one dimensional thinking lol. What happens when the well runs dry, they shut down basketball and go all in on Art?

No reason A10 cant have 3 OR MoRE in next year.

The selection committee should be ashamed at letting so many ACC teams in the tourney. Most got waxed badly and now only unc remains who
will prob lose to butler.

Plus putting in a 15 loss vandy team over a 6 loss Illinois St team that did well in the NIT and should've beat UCF (loss by 1 after being up big).

When will they change the RPI system where losing to a lot of top 100 schools is better than beating mid majors and having no "bad losses" ??
Having a #1 SOS does not make 15 regular season losses OK.

The question will be how much patience will they have with Rhoades? Wade left them with few upper classmen, a challenging schedule, and a recruiting class that at this moment is far from set in stone. I think even with Wade and their highly touted class they may have had a slower start than their used to.

Next season is not guaranteed. A lot depends on how much of the incoming recruits stay and what style of basketball will Rhodes implement.

I would argue he will do pretty well in first season - will that be enough for vcu fans? Not sure. Wade was supposed to be all that and a bag of chips. Then well we know how that ended.

He's a good coach and he's grounded to Richmond. A guy that loves the town...makes it easy to pitch stability going forward to sponsors. As long as he doesn't get fired he will stay.

He's not too far removed from the program that his sales pitch on what vcu has been, will still be....for recruits.

vcu dodged a bullet with Wade leaving and Rhoades will be their blessing.

Couldn't be happier with the progress Paulsen has made at Mason but looking at the rest of A10, Rhode Island saved the league for a 3rd bid this year but I have doubt we will get 3 bids again next year. Here is how A10 has performed over the last 7 years in terms of ncaa bids and it's not very encouraging when you look at the trend.

2011 - 3 (CAA also got 3 bids that year)
2012 - 4
2013 - 5
2014 - 6
2015 - 3
2016 - 3
2017 - 3 ( got lucky with RI winning auto bid)

First thing that came to mind this morning when I got to office, what if both CAA and A10 get 2 bids in 2018??? I would hate to see that happen consider what we went through to join the A10.

Wasn't that the story with all of them? I agree with your assessment - but there is a record of coaches with relationships to the vcu program using it as a stepping stone. Again - Agree vcu was fortunate to land Rhoades quickly --- but we are building in assumptions at this point.

I know Rhoades heading to Richmond, VA makes sense, I guess, from a basketball perspective. However, what a huge drop in academics going from Rice to vcu.

UNCW just lost their coach, I doubt it's going to happen. But even if it does, long-term the A-10's multi-bid history and future potential is much higher than the CAA.
