A10 Coaching Carousel

2018 - ?
Dayton - Maybe, my guess is they will be down next year losing Scoochie, Cooke and Pollard
RI - Yes, probably will be the favorite again
vcu - Nope, new coach, losing 5 seniors, big question mark
Mason - Nope, but maybe we have a pleasant surprise for next year? :superhappy:
Richmond - Nope, Losing Cline and Shawndre is huge
St Bon - Nope, will be NIT good but not ncaa good in my opinion
GW - Nope, added experience for the returning players probably offset the loss of Cavanaugh so again not ncaa good
who else has a chance? so we are looking at 1 at large and 1 auto bid for next year?

Couldn't be happier with the progress Paulsen has made at Mason but looking at the rest of A10, Rhode Island saved the league for a 3rd bid this year but I have doubt we will get 3 bids again next year. Here is how A10 has performed over the last 7 years in terms of ncaa bids and it's not very encouraging when you look at the trend.

2011 - 3 (CAA also got 3 bids that year)
2012 - 4
2013 - 5
2014 - 6
2015 - 3
2016 - 3
2017 - 3 ( got lucky with RI winning auto bid)

It'll be interesting to see what happens with vcu and Dayton since they graduate so many players, but URI brings back their entire backcourt: Dowtin, Matthews, Terrell, and Robinson. If Langevine and their redshirt big are ready to step up, they could be a tourney team again.

And why not us? We've got our issues, but screw it.

No reason A10 cant have 3 OR MoRE in next year.

The selection committee should be ashamed at letting so many ACC teams in the tourney. Most got waxed badly and now only unc remains who will prob lose to butler.

The Big East didn't do much better... of course neither did the A10.

Dance Card had URI in even if they had lost the tourney championship. Dance Card was 100% at predicting the teams again this year.

Anyone who points to Rhoades' record at Rice and questions his ability knows nothing about college basketball.

Rice is an elite academic school that is very difficult to recruit to and has had very little success in basketball, but Rhoades did very well there and leaves behind a young roster that is poised to dominate CUSA for the next coach -- think of what Paulsen did at Bucknell before he came to Mason. The similarities are there.

Rhoades is also a middle-aged Pennsylvania guy, an excellent basketball mind and a guy who really relates well to players.

It's a home run hire for vcu, which is fine. We've got our guy and we need to worry about keeping him and his staff.

Rice has a $5 billion endowment. If they thought Rhoades was worth it, they could have easily paid what vcu is offering. So why didn't they?

I agree that it is a great hire and kudos to their AD that they pulled it off quick - which makes me think they knew Wade was heading out the door.

I don't think the issue is with his coaching ability. I think the doubts surround his ability to recruit.

It will be interesting.

If there was one thing I learned about the selection committee, they will always be inclined to put more teams from the P5 conferences in the tourney. It has always been that way and will always be, it's the big names that make NCAA tourney a big stage. It's sad for the little guys but true, just gotta deal with it and work harder.

Because to them basketball isn't worth it. Great school, doesn't need the team to keep it relevant. They have baseball and I'm sure that's where they're focused.

St. Joe's will be much better next season if all their injured players come back healthy. I would not be surprised at all to see them in the Top 4 and contending for an at-large. Martelli rebuilds in a hurry.

I don't see why St. Bona can't contend for the NCAAs with Adams and Mobley coming back.

It's not just about money for Rhoades. He was a city of Richmond guy long before he was a vcu guy. He was at RMC for 13 years before the vcu AD decided that Shaka needed a good assistant with local connections

He has recruited very well at Rice, which is a place that is very hard to get kids past admissions.

He will have no such problems at vcu.

I don't think this is the year to question the inclusion of so many BCS teams - there just weren't very many at large caliber mid major teams, and the few that were on the bubble mostly won their conference tournaments. I think this fact is further evidenced by the lack of upsets in the 1st round.

UNCW, MTSU, Wichita St. were legit - who else?

Dayton and vcu might have both gotten first round wins if they weren't paired with underseeded mid-majors. It would have been nice for the committee to have rewarded Illinois St. for their season even if it didn't win in the first round or maybe Monmouth?
