Wade knew he needed to cash in his chips while he still had them.

vcu's AD is looking for another job and Wade could've been stuck working for a new boss while rebuilding with a very young team. Even if they don't lose any players or recruits vcu likely isn't an NCAA team next season anyhow.

Wade's stock is never going to be any higher than it is today. He's not a great coach by any means. May as well go get paid while he could.

Do we know why our AD didn't hire any of Coach L's assistants when he left (because he sucked, etc.)? Were any of them ready for that role? Don't want to beat a dead horse - just curious.

Rhoades is a terrific coach. He will do very well at vcu.

Yup; agreed. Wade leaves them high and dry and they just go get the next man up. Rhoades now has experience running a D1 team and can be plugged in with the already existing relationships he has at vcu.

No brainer.

Am I missing something about Rhoades? 5th place in the 23rd ranked conference? :singing:
They won 23 games this season from 12 last season so there is coaching ability there. Is it the right move for vcu though? He has only been at Rice for 3 years. What makes them believe he won't leave in a few years also. Oh vcu never learning from experience, stepping stone forever.

Looking at Rice's previous seasons he has gradually improved them in his 3 years. 2 conf wins before he got there to 8, 7 and 11 this year. He isn't as God send as the Twitter post's suggest him to be.

Rhoades >Wade in coaching

Wade>>>>>>Rhoades in recruiting

This is something few people are evaluating. Rhoades is a great coach and limited at recruiting.

vcu's team loses a lot to graduation this year. So his coaching will be needed to make the most of a team of younger players. And he has to hope Wade got good talent. It could be bumpy.

However, I think in the long term it will be better than having Wade.

I am just shocked that he left after two years.

Reading their boards I am amazed at how quicklu they turned on him. Before this they were all on the Will Wade bandwagon. Now they can't say anything more than F-Him. They say the same about Grant.

Wow.

From Wade's perspective I can see why he left. The money up front and now because LSU is looking at vcu like Texas did with Grant. They think he can be the magic spark. But to be honest Coach Capelle and Grant were better than Wade. Wade may be the last drink the P5 take from vcu for a while if he flames out at LSU. So that will be good for vcu.

Still not sure if Rhoades will equal quick success at vcu. Taking a close look at what he did at Rice - there was improvement - but marginal.

Paulsen has done more in two seasons with less than Rhoades did at Rice in 3 with more.

Rhoade's D1 head coaching record is 47-52 through 3 years at Rice. I can't conclude how good he is as a coach given a small sample, all I know is we all need a little bit of luck to win in life and not everyone has that luck even for the best coaches/recruiters.

In life or basketball, ups or downs, all roller coaster is bound to end....vcu's decade of success in basketball will be no different.

Tide is turning guys, tide is turning...

Agreed - we just need to take care of our business. We lost some scoring to graduation. We need to work up these new recruits fast. Paulsen has proven he can. Press forward.

Couldn't be happier with the progress Paulsen has made at Mason but looking at the rest of A10, Rhode Island saved the league for a 3rd bid this year but I have doubt we will get 3 bids again next year. Here is how A10 has performed over the last 7 years in terms of ncaa bids and it's not very encouraging when you look at the trend.

2011 - 3 (CAA also got 3 bids that year)
2012 - 4
2013 - 5
2014 - 6
2015 - 3
2016 - 3
2017 - 3 ( got lucky with RI winning auto bid)
