We needed better recruiting. Our player development is fine.

How do you know he can’t recruit? He’s a young guy who has been to the tournament and looks like most of the recruits he’ll be meeting with. Maybe he’ll be able to connect with them better than our current coaches.

Do you think this team still has the luxury to experiment with maybes?

Not sure how much of an “experiment” it’s going to be. The kid already had a D1 job. Duane Simpkins is going to become our lead recruiter, and everyone here seems to think highly of him (odd that he’s the one guy in the entire program everyone seems to like).

I’m not exactly sure what people are expecting. The other choices we’ve been talking about: Tony Skinn (who is at Seton Hall and might follow his coach to Virginia Tech) is probably not coming even if we offered him the job, and Lamar Butler has never been an assistant at a university, so he’d be even more of an experiment than Bryson Johnson.

I’ve got nothing against Bryson and I’m not surprised if he’s the choice — all head coaches want to work with people they know and trust. Our players should be pleased. Hopefully he is highly successful in his new role.

Still, I was hoping Lamar would get the job because he has great recruiting contacts in the DMV, he works at an elite HS program right down the street from campus and he obviously has as much insight as anyone about what Mason has to offer a student-athlete. He’s also one of us — he’s gonna get a college job sooner than later and it may as well be at the school he led to the Final Effing Four.

Unfortunately it doesn’t seem like that’s in the cards.

maybe we can both be happy if Fischer and Kelly both leave... go snag Lamar Butler NOW!

I thought about that, but there’s no way DP is gonna have a No. 2 who has one year of full-time college coaching experience and a No. 3 who has never coached above HS.

The fact that Lamar’s recruiting “territory” is the same as Simpkins’ doesn’t help either. We really don’t need two guys recruiting the DMV.

It might have worked if Lamar was willing to start out as a grad assistant or something similar and work his way up, but I think that ship has sailed.

You also would have three former guards on your coaching staff and no one to really work with your bigs. Kelly is our post guy right now, if he leaves you've got to go out and find another one.

Wouldn’t there still be room for one more coach?

I think you are limited to three official assistant coaches, and then you can have all sorts of support personnel — director of basketball operations, video coordinator, graduate assistant, director of player personnel, official water bearer, etc.

Gotcha, I figured someone would have to replace Bryson. But he’s only a graduate manager

Maybe Otis or Jollay? Or Grayer since it seems nobody wants him.

Otis wants to play in Europe first before going into coaching. He also said he wanted to coach high school in Giant Killer’s exit interview with him. I don’t known if that’s as high as he wants to go or where he thinks he needs to start.

I wouldn’t have a problem inviting him back once his basketball career is over.

Tech has hired Wofford's coach. Maybe Rhoades will be a candidate at Wofford.

this is why i don't get the transfer, I don't think he's done enough...at least in the last 2 seasons... for any program better than mason to say, "we need to land this kid." If no one takes him, can he come back and play for us?
