GIVING DAY 2023
Maybe if we had wifi in the arena, self proclaimed super fan, DJ3, would attend so he could also watch the game on his phone/ipad! Win Win!

That is just a homer and rude type comment. You are probably the type that only wants to use iPads because Apple makes them.

I'll bet if EBA offered 20GbS Wi-Fi
at least student attendance would increase.
They still wouldn't watch the game over their phones,
but at least there would be asses in seats.

Whoa, that rhymes!:superhappy:

Students (whether they know or not) actually get wi-fi in the EBA. I saw someone a few rows in front of me Wednesday night with their laptop. The wi-fi that works in classrooms and the JC is the same network EBA uses.

So I'm now out of state, used to have season tickets and donated fairly regularly in addition. This thread is the first time I hearing about this and it took me a while to figure out if this was just more of the same bs we've heard about a mythical practice facility or if it's legit. I still don't really know what to believe.

I think the team needs its own place to practice and would like to donate (if this is really going to happen this time), but also doubt it is worth as much as some think. At the end of the day we need a good coach and a great game atmosphere. Paulsen or another good coach probably don't want guys who are going to make decisions on flashy facilities.

I also think the other important and overlooked part is that the facility will also give the team a solitary academic area which is just, if not more, important than the gym. If they don't make grades they can't play. And we also don't want dumb asses representing mason on national tv when we return to the promise land.

Phase 1 sounds to be as real as something that hasn't started yet can be. They have mentioned a summer start date several times. When work starts, that will make it definite.

Phase 2 is the one that doesn't seem to be as definite. They have to raise a nice chunk of change for that. If I had to guess, though, based on previous experience with university higher ups, they would not have gone this far without a backup plan. If they don't get enough for the practice facility specifically, they will for the Faster/Farther campaign and will play some shell games to make it happen. Now, maybe I am misreading it, and the phased approach is the plan B. If they don't raise the money, we have practice courts, stop there and call it a day or until they can raise the money.

"This area is indeed used by club sports for practices and tournaments and would take away precious space that could be used to further the club sports athletes and the club sports program, which is an extremely important part of student life at Mason."

Sorry to interrupt the fight, but Duquense is putting $40 million into their arena/constructing a basketball facility. How the f**k do these small a** schools seem to obliterate us resource-wise?

In all honesty, no idea, I suspect that they may get approval for state funding or they just have some alumni who can help pony up the bill. Duquense has been around a while so its probably easier.

It's an older school but it's pretty small. I can't imagine it has an immense amount more alum than us and I doubt that the state would fund a private schools facilities. Guess they have a sugar daddy. But f**k it's frustrating that we finally seem destined to get near the top of the facilities in the A10 and the smaller school just 1 ups us.

Why do we doubt ourselves this much?

Their basketball arena currently seats 4,400 and has pullout bleachers. So, let's get real about how far that $40 million is going to get them.

Mason estimates that it would cost $80 million to redo EBA. Assuming NoVa and Pittsburgh construction costs are roughly equal, and that their place is roughly half the size, I would think that it will get them a massive overhaul.

Duquesne is private, so no state funds. Their endowment is apparently at $262 million ranking 265 out of 851 colleges. http://www.duqsm.com/endowment-fund-surpasses-203-million/

Meanwhile, Mason was ranked 564 as of 3 yrs ago.

A, renovating is always more expensive than new construction. B, they are splitting those funds between basketball facility and renovations to the arena. C, we spent $25 million on a box office, an expanded concourse and renovated bathrooms. A new roof for us is estimated to be between $8 and $10 million (that would be about $35 million right there). So I don't know how far it would go.

One thing I will say, I do hope our AD releases our strategic vision for EBA soon (do they plan on renovating or building a new facility?).
