2025 Portal Season

Why in the hell did we redshirt him if there was any possibility of this?! You can't tell me we couldn't have used an extra shooter at any point this year.
From what I heard he was told he would be a 6th or 7th man all off season and right before the season Tony pulled him in and said I don't have minutes for you. From that moment on he was gone.

GIVING DAY 2023
Our lineup as of 3/26/25 at 11:56 AM. This could get ridiculous.

1 - Begg
2 - O'Connor & Booker
3 - Cokley
4 - Sivka
5 - Emejuru & Kanga
I would think Tony has earned the benefit of the doubt with regard to personnel decisions — if he thinks he can bring in somebody better than AB, so be it. I want the best team possible and have faith in the staff to deliver that.

Bottom line though, he should not have been redshirted during this period of unconditional free agency.

That is what I'm getting at - unless Tony knew he was only going to get minutes in garbage time and allowed him to redshirt as a favor.

Based on Tony's comments, AB's contributions last year as a true freshman, and our scoring/shooting deficiencies this year - I believe he could have contributed meaningfully.

Hindsight being 20/20, it didn’t work out as intended, but I can see Tony wanting to give AB time to work on his game and preserve a year of eligibility when we were loaded at the wing positions. A zero-downside play, wait and see if he levels up to become a legit rotation piece in 2025-26 and beyond.

Tony spends more time with these guys than anyone. If he thinks the staff can bring in someone better and it’s now in the best interest of both parties to go their separate ways, that’s good enough for me.

As Kim said, the reality is the portal works both ways.

Any thoughts on Howard’s Blake Harper?

Kid was a freshman stud. Can he make it in the A10?
i have Howard Partial Season Tix
he dominated in the MEAC as well as their OOC schedule which has a lot of high-quality buy games

i expect him to be at least an average A-10 player with his ceiling a function of his hard work as well as his next school's development program

i don't think he can play guard at his next stop/level, but will be a SF or wing

i heard he wants $250K minimum so i think he heads to a P4
unsure how he fits into UMD or Georgetown - but those are the likely local teams that can afford him,
otherwise, he plays in a P4 outside of the DMV

At the end of the day, he wasn't Tony's guy, either. He could have just tossed him by the waste side, but he let the kid redshirt and everyone moves on. I have full confidence in Tony and I'd expect we're in the same position as the majority of schools at this point when it comes to roster construction. This is the new reality for everyone.

From what I have heard, obviously AB and Jalen are gone. BOC is staying (likely), Stas is likely gone, Gio also had an academic screw up with an advisor but if he can get it sorted he's gone, and Begg we just don't know yet.

As to who Martelli might bring to vcu with him, this is part of Mook's The Vault free portion:

Bryant now faces significant challenges after the loss of Martelli, compounded by the departures of key players. Graduating seniors Earl Timberlake, Rafael Pinzon (2024-25 All-Conference First Team), Barry Evans (2024-25 League Newcomer of the Year), Kvonn Cramer, and Connor Withers will leave the program. While sophomore forward Keyshawn Mitchell had committed to return, his status is now uncertain, as are the futures of sophomore Aaron Davis and juniors Evans and Jakai Robinson.

And so, a Bulldogs program that looked poised to challenge Vermont's longstanding dominance in the America East now faces a significant setback. Martelli's departure adds to the loss of key seniors, including the aforementioned Earl Timberlake, 2024-25 All-Conference First Team honoree Rafael Pinzon, 2024-25 League Newcomer of the Year Barry Evans, and veterans Kvonn Cramer and Connor Withers. While sophomore forward Keyshawn Mitchell had previously committed to return, his future is now uncertain, along with the decisions of sophomore wing Aaron Davis and juniors Barry Evans and Jakai Robinson, who are also likely to be influenced by the changing of the guard in Smithfield.

I'd like to see Stas stay, given his height and shooting ability. I really don't think we lose much if Gio leaves.
