GIVING DAY 2023
It may not initially but the point is we need to get more butts in seats. Otherwise you are going to start losing players and coaches. There are other ways that you can make up the lost revenue (if needed) like increasing tuition by $5 or something. The players and staff are starting to get frustrated with the lack of attendance. As a former student athlete, I can tell you that one of the biggest frustrations for the players around 2004-08 was they never knew what kind of crowd they were going to get. I will never forget sitting next to Liz Larranaga when we played Hofstra in 2011. They had Charles Jenkins and it was a big/important game. Halfway through the game, she turned to me and said "Jim is going to be pissed with the size of this crowd" She went on to tell me how frustrating it was getting for him that we can barely fill half of the arena and didn't know what else they needed to do. We ended up beating the sh$*$ out of Hofstra, which is good, but I will go to my grave saying that the lack of buy in from the community/attendance issues had a lot to do with L's departure.
GREAT last sentence!
And fwiw, I say let the students in for free.
I used to just walk in. Didn't even have to show my id. Heck, nobody else was there!

Lower prices. It’s not that complicated. I contemplated shelling out the $150 to bring my modest family of three to a couple of games so far this season, but couldn’t justify it. We could’ve sat in bad seats for less, but looking down at all the empty seats in lower sections is just insulting. I’ll get a better view and atmosphere from my couch. It’s a ridiculous price tag for a stadium that’s a third full.

Did you email Mason Athletics about that?

Walk-On
Glad it was louder today. There were lots of kids. I don’t know if other families did the BOGO like we did. But I was disappointed that the social media ad advertising the offer also said that tickets started at ten dollars and had to be bought at the ticket office. When I went they said that the BOGO started at fifteen dollars. They said the AD said that when they checked and front line agreed with me that it was a poor ad to make it seem like two could get in for ten dollars.

Additionally, for simplicity’s sake let’s say there are 1000 walk ups that are paying $25 a ticket. Would lowering the price to $12.50 drive 2000 walk ups to make up for the lost revenue?
Would hope the decision makers are doing a bit more nuanced analysis than this…

Thought the emphasis on simplicity was obvious.

The point is, how much of an impact would lowering ticket prices truly have? I’m all for one off promotions like they are currently doing, but what is the upside of lowering them across the board?

I’ve worked my entire career in sports and have been in these kinds of conversations. The general consensus has always been to increase the value a ticket holder is receiving rather than devaluing the ticket.

Increasing the value of the experience usually increases cost…as does lowering the cost of a ticket. Value is in the eye of the beholder.

If you wants more butt's in the seats, start recruiting more starting caliber Asian players. Maybe hit up India, Sri Lanka and Turkey. That will fill up EBa if there is no cricket tourney at Robinson High, obviously.

I don’t know that we’re ever gonna have consistently great attendance. Mason doesn’t seem like that kind of school for many reasons.

I just wish more of the people who do show up at EBA understood the value of being engaged and loud. Contrary to the homecourt disadvantage theory from CAAZone lore, it really does help your team play better and in many cases leads to the opponent playing worse.

The reason Tony comments publicly whenever we have an energized crowd is because it makes a difference to our players. If you care enough to buy a ticket and go to the game, stand up and cheer … and if some Karen glares at you, tell her to F off lol.

In the spirit of the new year, while basking in the glow of a great home victory in front of an energetic crowd that was spurred on in large part by the people sitting in the discounted lower bowl seats, I provide the following link to help you find great tickets available in the lower bowl for $10 to upcoming games. Let's keep these sections filled and provide an afternoon/evening of entertainment to your whole family for $30 total:

Ticket Search

There are $10 tickets available for 1/8, 1/11 and 1/18 at $10 a piece. If you don't want to pay the Ticketmaster fee, you can buy them at the ticket office without the additional fee. You could, potentially, sit right next to the Mason bench with some of these tickets.

Hope to see some more of you there enjoying great George Mason basketball and providing a great atmosphere for the team and fans.

I'll also provide a plug for our Women's team as well. If you haven't seen them yet, you are missing out on something special. I am told that we are expecting a crowd of about 3,000 people for their game tomorrow, Jan 2.

Finally, I'll remind people that I have I have season tickets to both Men's and Women's games and both are in the VIP seating area. I have mentioned multiple times on here that I frequently have extra tickets available, but, often don't know until game day how many. If you are interested in using my tickets at a game, send me a DM.
