2023 Transfer Portal Thread

Devin Dinkins, while he hasn't shown he can be a legit point guard in the A10 (only glimpses) was recruited as a PG and was Kim's first recruit. So I'm not sure I follow here.
I think that's this individuals point. KE has so far failed to bring in a PG up to his standard in his three years as a coach so far (that position is the shaky one at PC it looks like too).

And while Polite turned into a dog this year, KEs relentless and singular pursuit of Rudi Williams and then failing there no doubt hurt the team in the portal last year.

Right now you have Polite who is returning who averaged 11.5 per game so obviously hes probably going to be a big piece. On paper, unless Mason gets a guy who scored more than that, he will be our top returning option.

In regards to the other ones, it'll probably be more organic to see who can really score but you have a guy like Hall who averaged almost 6 points a game in averaging 10 minutes a game. Darius Maddox averaged 8.5 points a game, so if he comes, he would also be an option as well. Jesse Zarzuela averaged almost 17 points a game, so he too would be an option if he comes to Mason. We obviously need at least a few guys who can really score.
Zarzuela intrigues me. A lot to like, but perhaps a bit inefficient with a sub 40% fg% and more turnovers than assists? Still, to have a guard that can score like that . . .

Someone earlier asked who everyone's top priority would be out of those visiting so far. If Billups is as good defensively as advertised, it could really help Tony establish his "patriot pressure" identity. He might be an important one to keep after.

or do we get a 4 to 5 guys - generating 60 points per game, with the highest averaging 15 points/game in a balanced offense approach?

Henry, Polite and 3 starting transfers

Yes. A balanced attack would be great! Multiple ballhandlers to lead a fast break. Multiple shooters on the floor. No one person a defense can key on and disrupt the entire flow of the offense. Not sure how realistic that’s going to be in year 1 given the current state of our roster, but I’m sure it’s the goal.

But if you’re talking about who is going to get a bucket when we need a bucket, I’m going to guess right now that’s Polite with his ability to drive and either get to the basket or get fouled doing it. He also became a bit of a clutch 3-point shooter late in the season.

Joel’s stats aren’t sexy by any means, but he’s worth doing some diligence on. The kid from Central Michigan is worth looking at too considering how he scores a ton.

I get that, but Dinkins also played for 1 year. We also saw how Ronny transformed last year especially later in the year. For whatever reason he didn’t get that “bridge” pg that we all wanted. Singleton was not that answer. I’m intrigued at how Dinkins will end up but I don’t think we should write him off either. I do think the inconsistencies was one of the many reasons last year was held back. I bet we see a nice progression from Dinkins this year.

That said, I hope we do land that bridge/second option/1b point guard this go round.

3 pts and free throws. He was huge.

I’m not as knowledgeable as some of the transfers as others in here — question for y’all is are any of them someone we can build an offense around?
Landing one of the big guards like Darius Maddox or Keyshawn Hall could give us some punch on the wing.

I was saying we were always chasing PG(especially transfers) and failed. Polite is a combo guard that was recruited by Paulsen. Multiple conversations about it.

That’s fair and makes sense. And then we settled on Singleton for that role. He settled in later on but he was not the pg answer we needed if Ronny missed a game etc.

Yes. Hall, Maddox, Billups, and Cornish all visited. Now hopefully we get at least 2 of the four to commit.

Amari Kelly also visited (same time as Cornish?).
I'm going all in with a sweep of all 4! Tony the Godfather.

I’m not as knowledgeable as some of the transfers as others in here — question for y’all is are any of them someone we can build an offense around? Because that seems to be our biggest need, right now we don’t really have a center piece for the offense to build around. We need a primary scoring option. Like others have said Cornish has a ton of potential to be that guy, but if you are a first year head coach do you gamble your first season on it? Not as knowledgeable on either Maddox or Hall, gonna have to do some research tonight.
I’m of the opposite “mindset.” While it was great having Josh and he was very good, it made us very one dimensional and slow.

If Tony’s philosophy is defend and score, we’ll be ok without a “run the offense through x” player. Someone will emerge during the season. It’s not worth the quest to find “the answer” since nothing is guaranteed. We’re also more dangerous if there’s no “one guy.”
