Mizzou Man

Walk-On
I hope I am not boring folks with my posts over here, but I am guessing there is at least some interest from several of you about how things are looking in the Mizzou search. This is an uncharacteristically quiet search for Missouri. Our last major search was our football search of 2019 and that was very chaotic with damaging leaks and the public realization that boosters, our Board of Curators, and school president had effectively hijacked it away from our athletic director (who "retired" last summer). Our school president, who is now also our school chancellor, has a high level of influence on this search and he is trying to ensure this basketball search has very few leaks.

The insiders seem to think that Kim English and Jerome Tang (assistant at Baylor) are definitely involved. Beyond that little is known. There was some talk of John Beilein, Dana Altman, and perhaps even Sean Miller being candidates over the weekend. It seems like that is not true, with there being a slight chance of Altman actually being a serious candidate but Mizzou while it has SEC money is closer to Mississippi State and Vanderbilt than Alabama and Texas A&M. Cuonzo Martin's contract terms dictated that he could not be fired without cause until 5/1/22 and after that date he would be owed $6 million. I still have not heard terms of the separation but it is clear they came to some agreement and Missouri likely is paying him more than the $6 million in order to get this done a month and a half earlier. Altman makes more than Cuonzo and has a $4 million buyout. That's a lot of cash for us even with our SEC money.

Kim English is gaining traction at this point because while nationally he would be a questionable hire, for us he is a HR from an interest and energy perspective. We desperately need that. Our current football coach came to us after one year as a head coach at Appalachian State and even though he is only 11-12 at Mizzou, he recruits at an incredibly high level and sells the program better than anyone we have ever had. The constant question fans have asked is "who is the Eli Drinkwitz for Mizzou basketball?" and that answer is obviously a certain coach in Fairfax, VA.

I apologize for the long-winded nature of this post. It was very successful in getting me away from doing real work for a bit. I don't plan on being a fixture over here or an obnoxious SEC fan, but I thought I would chime in with a little bit of info and more conjecture.

You’re all right with me @Mizzou Man, even though I feel like crying every time I read one of your posts lol.

Also, it never really did anything for me, but I sincerely hope the Missouri administrators and boosters enjoy Tang.

I hear you. I know it is a rough situation for GMU. I registered over here a year ago within minutes of Kim getting the job and I was hoping to provide some info. I think there was some issue with the confirmation and so I wasn't able to post and then I came back once we made our coaching move and I was able to post.

I have a lot of fondness for George Mason because of that 2006 run. My college roommate and one of my best friends came to Mizzou from Fall's Church, VA and actually he ended up getting his master's at GMU later on. But I can still remember the 2006 Regional Final and we were watching at our apartment and they interrupted the GMU/UConn game with the introductory press conference for Mike Anderson. My buddy called the local CBS affiliate multiple times to try and get them to switch back to the game. They didn't do it of course, but we were at least able to watch the last few minutes of regulation and the OT. Very fun memory.

Why would Mizzou want another potential Kim Anderson situation? Frank Haith is available lol

That's a valid point. Arguably the worst major conference college basketball hire of the last 20 years was made by us and he was also a Mizzou alum and his first name was also Kim. Our rivals will have a lot of fun with that if Kim English is the next coach at Mizzou. The question for our decision-makers right now, I think is assuming Kim has interest in the job, is it a bigger risk to hire him? Or is the risk in that he is some sort of East Coast Mark Few and we miss out on a great coach that will haunt us forever.

I think Kim English cares more than the average coach about what is said about him. You probably have picked up on that this past year. He was that way as a college athlete. Obviously if he leaves after just one year at GMU there is going to be frustrations and people will think and say unflattering things. Kim is a Baltimore guy and I don't know if that would bother him if he was the coach at Tulsa or Colorado State and left after a year. But he is from Baltimore and GMU is a DMV school (I think I said that right) and I could see it being a really tough decision because people at home will see him in a less than favorable light. It's a suboptimal situation and with Mizzou coming off of an NCAA Tournament appearance just last season and Kim going 14-16 in his first year, I don't think anyone would have anticipated that this situation would have materialized as such. But yet here we are.

Missouri is a middle to lower end SEC job.

It doesn't appear like the top end of the conference (Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Auburn) is going anywhere anytime soon. Texas and Oklahoma join the conference in the next year or two. If Nate Oats stays, he's likely to bring Alabama back to previous form. Florida won't stay down for too long with the right hire. Georgia people seem to think that Mike White is the right guy to get things going in Athens after he was mistreated in Gainesville. Stackhouse has elevated Vanderbilt to respectability. Buzz looks like he has built a culture at A&M. Ole Miss and Mississippi State will never be a consistent threat. South Carolina is generally a non-factor, and LSU is currently in shambles, however it has a decent hoops history.

You can make the argument that Missouri is no better than the 7th best job in the conference, before Texas and Oklahoma join. I'll be nice and only put Texas ahead of them, so we are talking about the 8th best job in the SEC, provided that LSU stays down, Moser doesn't get it going in Norman, A&M doesn't commit the same NIL money to Basketball as it has to Football, and Mike White can't land the top Atlanta prospects.

Including Loyola, I can safely place Dayton, vcu, Davidson, St. Louis, and Loyola in above us.

After that, I'd group Mason in with UMass and Rhode Island simply because of brand and salary commitment.

Despite Richmond's run this year, I don't view them as on the same level. Bonnies are a wildcard for me at the moment.

La Salle, GW, St. Joes, Duquense, and Fordham round it out.

I do think we are in a significantly better position to achieve and sustain success near the top of the conference, than Mizzou in the SEC.

Recruiting 4 stars and portal studs gets you into the top 4 consistently in the A10, which means bids and job security. Recruiting 4 stars and portal studs in the SEC is table stakes. If Kimmie wants the ramp to learn how to build a program first he'll stay. I'm a little concerned that he's a much more legitimate candidate than we'd like to think he is, though. If he really is the next big thing and Mizzou didn't give him a long hard look they'll look like idiots in a few years.

If anything I’d drop Davidson from your group. They outperform their underlying program foundation by a large margin because of McKillop, but he can’t coach forever — and when he’s gone they’ll go back to being a tiny private school with average facilities.

Richmond has tons of dough, a far better arena than ours and a brand-new practice facility. I’d be curious to know why you think they’re not on the same level or even higher than us.

Because they are the little brother in their own city and I don't believe that Mooney can recruit well enough to consistently win at a high level. Football will always be the priority. I do love that arena though.
