I know highlight videos lie sometimes, but this Frazier kid looks like a freaking baller. An explosive 6-7 wing who can play inside and out and jumps passing lanes like a maniac? My only question is why is he still uncommitted in April?

The last part is what worries me the most. Why isn’t he signed with anyone yet? Guys who are 6’6 and can play don’t wait until
The summer to sign. Most are on campus by mid June. Highlight video looks fine, only thing that worries me is not a ton of footage on him shooting, I get it he can dunk.

His stroke definitely isn’t the cleanest but love the way he jumps passing lanes. Can always find a use for long, athletic guys who will defend.

IMO he isn't committed yet b/c he is holding out for a better conference/program to play in/for. And well, this is our specialty, offering kids who probably can't play vs the best of the A10 and end up getting hurt trying to do so.

By the way, this must mean you think Polite is beneath us. Kolek is your guy then? I doubt that's how you feel.

Verdict is still out on all 3 recruits. Highlight videos vs sub par level competition isnt a marker. Neither is most accolades, although well deserved I'm sure.

This is what you should be saying about pretty much any recruit that isn't a top 100 or 5 star prospect (and even then, your 5 star might walk out the door after the first semester).

Mason's top 5 rated recruits since 2003 (according to 247 sports ):

1) Erik Copes
2) Patrick Holloway
3) Sherrod Wright
4) Andre Cornelius
5) Vertrail Vaughans

Any one of these guys on your Mount Rushmore?

Top 10

6) Paris Bennett
7) Therence Mayimba
8) Goanar Mar
9) Jonathan Arledge
10) Vaughan Gray

How about now?

This is how it should be! Stop pointing out anomalies!

Oh what Copes and Holloway could’ve/should’ve been.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by anomalies. The point I was trying to make is no one should be too high or too low on any recruit before they even get here and play their first game (and even then, sometimes it takes time).

But if we are looking at ratings, as an example (because everyone keeps bagging on Tyler Kolek)

ESPN rates the following recruits:

AJ Wilson grade: 74 (3 stars)
Tyler Kolek grade: 77 (3 stars)
Goanar Mar grade: 78 (3 stars)

So to be excited about the first two, but not Kolek, seems disingenuous to me.

By the way, our other two recruits, Ronald Polite and Malik Henry, are unrated by ESPN (which also doesn't mean anything -- Jordan Miller was also unrated by ESPN).

Good points. Honestly I think the most accurate barometer for evaluating recruits is just looking at the other offers they have. Schools absolutely occasionally miss on kids sure, but more often than not kids with solid offer sheets are going to pan out. Constantly trying to fill out your team with diamonds in the rough is not a viable recruiting strategy.

I don't like ratings and stars, especially at our level. I don't follow high school hoops and its very difficult to judge the level of high school competition. I've always judged our recruiting based on what schools we beat to get the kid to come to Fairfax. That doesnt mean the kid who came to Mason over Saint Louis or vcu is going to be a stud and the kid who comes to Mason over Binghamton and St Francis is going to be a dud, or vice versa. I'm not going to be critical of the kid before he steps on the floor at EBA. But over time, I've got to believe the stats favor signing more of the SLU/vcu-type players than the Binghamton/St Francis-type players if you want to get to play in the NCAA tournament. The key is getting those SLU/vcu-type players.

Everyone saying that they judge the recruiting based on what other schools have offered and bagging Kolek at the same time - the inconsistency bothers me.

Two A10 schools that routinely turn zeros to good players aren’t really what we are talking about (Schmidt is on another stratosphere than Paulsen). Was the kid offered by URI (the home state school of the mister basketball) or providence (5 miles from where this kid is from) ? I bag him because my friend coaches at NEPSAC AAA school that puts 2-3 kids per year into top ranked programs. He said Kolek is a good player but not going to be a program changer and shat on his AAU team and NEPSAC B league. Didn’t necessarily shit on the kid but shit on the talent he played against. So I take his opinion because unlike any of our fans he lives NEPSAC. He could be wrong and I hope he is but I know MiddleSex Magic is weak and b tier AAU because I played against them

Kolek is going to be a game changer if his buddy comes to Mason. And I'll leave it that.
