"they aren't good, their mom is toxic, they will fail" until the good twin goes 20-10 against us and we take an L next year playing a roster 75% comprised of DMV kids we don't recruit or don't sign

Tre Mitchell didn't even go 20 and 10 against us in either game, neither did Toppin or Langevine/Walker/Harris (In fact, I don't even think those three combined for 20 points), or French, or Osun (he had 16 points combined in two games), Hughes/Weathers (although Weathers had a damn good game and came pretty close). It's not front court defense we should be worried about (unless you think the Mitchells will be guarded by Hartwell a lot).

We were 5- 13. We didn't defend or beat anyone last year. Wash, rinse, repeat. We're 39 - 51 in the A10. Wake up people.

He has always been way too high on Fatts.... but I agree and think they are easily a top 5 A10 team

I'm always super torn on what I think about Fatts.

On one hand, he's an undersized shoot first PG who plays an ole defense that rivals some of our own guards.

On the other hand, the dude just flat out puts the ball in the bucket. He might shoot 30 times a game, but he'll probably make 15 of them.

How he handles having this much talent around him this year will dictate how many wins Rhode Island will get. Is he cool with scoring 15 and winning? Or does he want to go for 20+ every game but lose some close ones and have his team mates want to find some bars of soap and socks on a road trip?

Malik Martin got a wavier as well, all of Rhode Island's transfers are immediately eligible and you have to imagine that pushes them up to the top 4 discussion if they can put it all together on short notice.

Not going after transfers is not a viable strategy anymore, we are fighting with one hand behind our back. Paulsen has to change on this.

Let’s wait and see how URI performs in games before making any sweeping pronouncements. This is still a team sport — simply amassing “talent” doesn’t guarantee the pieces fit together in a way that makes sense.

If it was so easy to build a team around transfers, more coaches would do it.

Agreed, and I'm not advocating to build the whole team around them ala Rhodey, but to not go after or be tied to any of them as a matter of principle, that's just stupid at this point.

Frankly it may not be up to Dave — if the NCAA opens the floodgates on transfers, building a winning program exclusively through freshmen will be next to impossible.

He is probably gunshy after Reuter, but theres no reason to not try again considering what the NCAA might do and what everyone else is doing.

Agreed on it being next to impossible, but at the end of the day it is still up to Dave, or whoever the coach is at that point. If he still shows an unwillingness to go after transfers the rules don't matter.

I'll take another Reuter over another year of going in without a full roster of scholarships filled.

As long as they are the right transfers and not Okoloji, Royal, Reuter. Not saying it can't work here, it just hasn't in recent memory. With the changing landscape though, maybe we'll have some better success.

I know we've had some good success with community college transfers - Smith, Monroe, Thompson. Maybe that's something the staff can tap into more as well. If everyone else is chasing D1 transfers, maybe that leaves some room for the CC market? Or is it just not as viable a path as in years past?

I'm actually a big fan of grabbing kids transferring up from the JUCO circuit. A lot of the time, kids take JUCO years because of academic reasons vs performance reasons. There's a lot of talent floating around down there that I think ends up getting overlooked.

I’m just saying, if you lose kids who can leave for more playing time without sitting a year and you have 1-2 of your best players plucked by P5s annually, you won’t be able to field a roster unless you’re active in the transfer market. It will fundamentally change recruiting on our level.

GMU: 0
GW: 6 (starters 3)
Lasalle: 2 (starters 2)

If this list isn't telling you Paulsen isn't right for the job in the A10 I am not sure what will.... Unless you have a legendary HOF coach in McKillop every one of our peers hits the transfer market hard... both taking P5 retreads as well as high scorers from lower conferences.. Keep up with the times or you get left behind...
