Eh...I dunno. I judge recruiting (mostly) on who we beat out. And b/c DP went to see this kid in person makes it important for a recruiting victory. DP went. Not an assistant.
Recruiting is a component of roster-building. There are lots of parts that shouldn’t be overlooked, like accurate evaluation of talent, fit, character, etc. I’ve seen this notion floated around the boards that it’s all about who you beat. Consider the examples from our current roster:
DP beat out vcu, Penn St, UCF, Nevada for AJ Wilson. Impressive.
He beat out Nebraska, Iowa St, DePaul for Goanar Mar. Also impressive.
He beat out Radford, Longwood, Coastal Carolina for Justin Kier. Not so impressive.
Coastal Carolina, Georgia St, Alcorn St wanted Javon Greene. Not impressive.
Catawba, Towson, Radford wanted Jordan Miller. Not impressive.
It’s not all about who you beat out. Furthermore, fit is incredibly important. SLU beat out Kansas, Texas, Cincinatti for Carte’Are Gordon. What good is that doing them? McCall beat DP out for Tre Wood. Nothing gained for them now. DP lost Akien Frederick to Kent St a couple years ago. He averaged something like 4 and 3 while eating a scholarship for 2 years.
Now, DP clearly wants Adams-Woods. I hope he gets his man. But we can’t judge him as a recruiter/roster-builder solely off who he beats out for a recruit. We should judge him as a recruiter based on his roster. And yes, it has holes. I have no problem with you saying that. From my perspective, it’s much more due to missing on big men (Reuter, Temara, Dixon, Relvao) than to losing battles to the likes of UMass. So I would argue that hitting on Oduro is the most important piece to evaluate DP on in this recruiting class.
