So back to recruiting- interesting they offered a 6’6 transfer. Seems like they are into the transfer market for the last scholarship and another guard/scorer

Technically wouldn't a transfer not count against this year's scholarships? Since Otis and Grayer graduate next year wouldn't it go against next year's open slots? Not sure how all that works with a transfer who sits out a year.

Not sure but I think it counts, like Reuter was on scholly last year. I always get confused by this stuff though.

Yep, every team in the NCAA gets 13 schollies a year period. Whether they are red shirting, sitting due to transfers rules etc..

Good rule as you can imagine Kentucky would just harvest players like corn every year due to their constant "one and dones". They would have 13 active schollies and an entire bench of non active schollies waiting to start and play the following year.

Not that they don't do this in a de facto way currently anyway but it would be much worse.

It is interesting to see them going after a 6'6, sit one play two guy, considering Jordan Miller is roughly the same size and looks to have a similar skill set. Winchester was 0-6 from 3pt last year, so he's clearly not a shooter. Based on a quote from an article I read about his decision to transfer, I think he may be looking at going to a P5 school.

“It was a hard decision because I love the team, I love the coaching staff, I love everything about Wright State and we’ve been through some good things together, going to the NCAA tournament and winning the Horizon League championship,” Winchester said. “But going to the tournament and playing against Tennessee, I realized there was more out there, more that opened my eyes, that I didn’t realize since I committed to Wright State before my senior year (of high school).

“I just realized there were more places that would help be develop in order to reach my ultimate goal, which is to play professionally,” he added. “That was the main reason I decided to transfer.”

In the By George interview, Paulsen talks about the philosphy on transfers and how they aren't going to bring in someone that will hinder the development of someone else.

If they are planning on redshirting Miller, then they would both sit out next year. Year 2 - Miller would be a Frosh, Winchester would be a Junior. Year 3 Miller would be a Soph, Winchester a Senior... correct?

If so, that would still give Miller his two years to shine for his Jr and Sr seasons. Everything I've read on Winchester makes me think he is a high character type kid (which is nice).

maybe you can help with this. Dusquesne currently has 14 scholarship players. how does this happen? They had 15 before a guy transferred

Not sure. Maybe I am misinformed but a buddy of mine who works as an attorney for a couple of recruiting services and AAU squads texted me and said 13 was the max regardless. The NCAA seems to have a million exceptions to the written rules.

Duquesne has like 5 guys either redshirtting or coming off redshirt transfer year plus I think 6 freshman so there has to be some sort of exception somewhere. They had started off the offseason with 15 I believe and are now down to 14 after 2 transfers and 1 more signee

I copied this and asked my friend. If I get a response, I'll post.

NCAA rules is 13.

A team can't go over 13 men's basketball scholarship players. Unless a player is receiving a scholarship from somewhere else (like a scholarship football player who also plays basketball), I wouldn't expect to see all of those players on the team next season. Some teams will over recruit knowing that someone will leave...could be the situation.

Since schoalrships are only year to year, I have heard of players receiving a scholarship one year because one was available, but not the following year. That is normally well laid out to the player beforehand and they know it's just for that one year. Also very rare.

NCAA hoops is a head-count sport of 13. Anyone above 13 can only receive NCAA "exempted" aid.

Looks like the staff gave Nick DiClementi the last scholarship for next season, so barring something unexpected we’re done adding players until 2019 class.

Nice of them to reward a walk-on who has worked his a** off. Getting his final year of school paid for will save Nick more than $20K.

Good for Nick - I'm still a bit concerned about depth down low though. Mason oughta be able to handle an injury or two to guards - not the case for the forwards.

At this point we weren’t getting a big capable of contributing next season anyhow.

We have Reuter, Calixte, Wilson and Mar to split up 80 minutes at the 4.

That should be plenty.

We could also go with a 4 guard line up if need be.
