FAIRFAX, Va. – George Mason University men's basketball head coach
Dave Paulsen has announced the signing of two student-athletes who will compete for the Patriots beginning in fall 2018.
The duo includes guards Jason Douglas-Stanley (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) and Jordan Miller (Middleburg, Va.).
"We are so excited to add Jason and Jordan to our Mason Family," Paulsen said. "To be able to recruit two individuals who helped lead their teams to state championships is very rare. Both guys are winners, team-first players, and individuals of the highest character. They are exactly the type of young men we desire as we continue to move our program forward. I'm looking forward to getting to work with them in the summer and am hoping that they arrive in Fairfax with another pair of state championships."
Douglas-Stanley is a 6-foot-2-inch guard who's entering his senior season at Mount Vernon High School - one of the most decorated basketball programs in the state of New York. As a junior, Douglas-Stanley helped lead the Knights to the 2017 New York NYSPHSAA AA state title, alongside current George Mason freshman
Greg Calixte. Douglas-Stanley poured in 16 points and hit a quartet of 3-pointers in the championship game to help Mount Vernon capture its 11th state title.
Under head coach Bob Cimmino, Douglas-Stanley has garnered all-state, all-county, all-section and all-league accolades during his first three seasons in a Mount Vernon uniform. He averaged 18.2 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 2.0 steals as a junior last season.
"I saw Jason by accident last winter as I was going to watch Greg in his team's state tournament run. I was struck by his ability to score, his quiet confidence, and his winning nature," Paulsen noted. "Our entire staff had the opportunity to watch Jason multiple times this summer and fall and we are all convinced that he will give us a dynamic, versatile scoring guard who will put pressure on the defense at all times. Jason is continuing to mature physically and I believe the sky is the limit to his potential."
Miller is a 6-foot-5-inch guard who competes for Loudoun Valley High School in nearby Purcellville, Va. He is suiting up for his senior season after a lauded junior campaign that culminated in the Vikings capturing the 2017 Virginia 4A state championship under head coach Chad Dawson. Miller dropped 26 points on 11-of-12 shooting in the title game for Loudoun Valley.
After the season, Miller earned Virginia 4A State Player of the Year accolades as well as Nova Sports and LoCo Player of the Year honors. He was named first team all-state, all-region and all-conference while also garnering Regional Player of the Year recognition.
"From the first time I saw tape of Jordan, I fell in love with his feel for the game, his versatility and his knack for scoring," Paulsen commented. "From day one, our staff made Jordan a top priority in our recruiting process. I had the chance to see virtually every game he played this summer and was impressed with his leadership and work ethic. As good of a player as Jordan is now, I believe he is just scratching the surface of his potential."
