I never said that the Final Four didn't do a lot for the University. That's how I found out about the school in the first place.
What I said had to do with wanting to have players that excel in all areas, athletically and academically. You may view them as puppets for your entertainment, but Paulsen CLEARLY cares about recruiting and coaching kids who value the education they are receiving, and turn out to be successful after their playing days are over, as do the vast majority of fans. Winning is extremely important, but so is the personal and professional development of these players, because if they aren't prepared for life after basketball then the coach and the University are not doing their jobs.

However, the value of the diploma increases with a banner!I don't think anybody disagrees that the final four team rebuilt Mason.. But, you will find me hard pressed to think that the record of our basketball team and non existent and not happening football team (not sure why this keeps getting brought up) has any baring on how my diploma is weighed.. We could lose every game and the weight of the diploma only goes up
Can you quantify your statement or provide supporting specifics? However, the value of the diploma increases with a banner!

I suppose athletics might help boost enrollment and alumni donations, and maybe that would help build the school's quality over time. It's pretty indirect, though. If I'm going to consider hiring someone based on the school they graduated from, I'm going to find out how good their school's academic program was, not how good their school's basketball team did in their conference tournament. There was a study conducted by Meracus Center economists (that Koch Mason thingy) on how NCAA performance affects how a university's "prestige" is perceived. It was done on Football, but I assume the same can be applied to basketball.
" The faculty Flutie factor: Does football performance affect a university's US News and World Report peer assessment score?", Sean E. Mulholland, Mercatus Center at George Mason University - http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0272775714000922
TL;DR: It basically boils down to people seeing a school drop mad money on a football program, be succesful and still excel academically leading to them to view a university as more prestigious.

Boosting value of a degree is a stretch but name recognition and boost in 'perceived prestige' never hurts. Mason is really underrated and overlooked on all fronts. Our school is so young, but it's done so much and gone really far. A natty or a banner wouldn't hurt boost our rep or at least just get our name out there some more.
The U.S. News rankings suck a** but I think it is a bit of a necessary evil to try and move up them. There was a good article about Northeastern basically found a way to jump waaaay up in them. Right or wrong, high school students and parents look at them. I would think Mason will continue to move up a few spots each year but the factors of the equation on how they calculate the rankings are really f**king weird so who knows. There was a study conducted by Meracus Center economists (that Koch Mason thingy) on how NCAA performance affects how a university's "prestige" is perceived. In 2003 OCU's endowment was 100 million. They voted on a football team in 2005. Their first game was in 2009. By 2010, their endowment had grown to 144 million.
OCU????[/QUOTE
TYPO, I meant ODU
Ocean City University?OCU????
Ocean City U FTW. I'd take classes at Seacrets all day.Ocean City University?
Actually, not much said. I'm not necessarily disagreeing with you, but unless you can provide evidence, your statement is essentially meaningless.Looks at Mason Post final four and Pre Final 4. Enough Said.
How does the athletic endowment translate into increasing the value of the diploma? In 2003 ODU's endowment was 100 million. They voted on a football team in 2005. Their first game was in 2009. By 2010, their endowment had grown to 144 million.
