He got interest from Mason. The staff had to have checked him out several times since he's local. His size and lack of competition clearly makes him a risk. Offer him a spot as a preferred walk-on. If he proves his ability, he gets his schollie down the road.

Going to say we have a preferred walk on spot available...

Do what Miami used to do, give him a track scholarship and let him play as a walk on.

The guy can shoot and handle the ball, can never have too many of those. No offense to Murrell, but this kid has to be better than him. (Ok maybe some offense)

What divisions did Dre Smith and Darryl Monroe play in?

Dre Smith was a 1st Team JUCO D-I All-American - http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/gema/sports/m-baskbl/auto_pdf/0708-mbb-mg-part-2.pdf:

"Cochise Community College: Played one year for the Apaches and was named first-team National Junior College Athletic Association All-American... Scored 23.1 points per game, fourth in the nation... Also averaged 3.6 assists, 3.4 rebounds and 2.0 steals on the season... Led Cochise C.C. to a 27-3 overall record and a 20-2 mark in conference play... Apaches won the Arizona C.C. Athletic Conference’s regular-season title... Was twice named A.C.C.A.C. Player of the Week... Had a season-high 40 points... Averaged 28.0 points over two games to win it the second time... Was named NJCAA Freshman of the Year, as well as the A.C.C.A.C. Player of the Year and the Region I Player of the Year..."

It's not really that close a comparison.

Otis played against the best competition -- public and private -- that New Jersey high school basketball had to offer.

He outplayed Isaiah Briscoe (now a sophomore at Kentucky) head to head on more than one occasion when Otis was at Linden and Briscoe played for Roselle Catholic.

Otis was considered by most schools too small and not athletically gifted enough to overcome his lack of size. It was never a question of exposure.

If Fragala had stayed at O'Connell or was putting up big numbers for one of the other DC-area private schools, he'd have more offers.

But schooling a bunch of suburban white boys isn't going to impress D-I coaches. He needs to prove he can do it against guys who are being recruited for college scholarships, not intramurals or local Rec leagues.

How would you compare the competition in Loudoun to that of the District that Spotswood is in (where Kier went)? When I was in HS (1998), Spotswood was single A and Loudoun schools were all AAA. Classifications are different now but I assume the gap is the same if not wider.

It's certainly a bonus to have highly athletic, highly skilled players with experience against the best competition. However, those players are a tough acquisition for non-P5 programs like Mason.

With a coach like Paulsen, you find players with two out of those three attributes, add intellect to the equation, and coach up the remainder. It makes sense to grab players who are athletic and skilled and then build up competitive prowess. Look what Coach P did with Marquise and is currently doing with Otis and Relvao. All three players took their athleticism and skills to build greater competitiveness and confidence as last season progressed. Their improvements were starkly clear.

Therefore, I'm not worried about the level of competition that Paulsen's recruits have faced in HS. If a player can shoot, move quickly, jump high, and see the court well, then mold that player to be the competitor that you want.

It's a great question. I was initially skeptical about Kier primarily because of the level of competition in the Shenandoah Valley, but he was a much better, more complete player than I thought.

That said, Kier is 6-4 with long arms and can impact the game in a number of ways that don't involve scoring.

If Fragala hadn't put up an insane amount of points, nobody would remotely see him as a D-I player.

The unanswerable question is whether he will be able to get his shot against bigger, stronger and more athletic opponents. I guess that's why coaches get the big bucks.

Where is the grad transfer everyone said was coming here?

I really don't know if some of the grad transfer talk is real or whether it's just wishful thinking. My only insight is that last Friday I was over in the RAC, looked into the gym, and Otis was working 1-on-1 with Jaire with Coach Paulsen and other coaches watching them. So after doing my usual treadmill routine, as I was exiting the locker room, I heard Paulsen's talking with Coach Fischer.

I exchanged "hi..how are you's" with them and said something like "I hear you guys are doing well in recruiting". Paulsen replied on his way out of the door (paraphrasing here) "We're trying..... we just had somebody in today".

So no chance for follow up questions. I hadn't seen anyone else earlier with Otis & Jaire in the gym. Could have been anybody earlier in the day--even a walk-on. Also saw Temara leaving the RAC and limping noticeably.

End of my in-depth report.

Don't be a knuckle-head. In case you couldn't comprehend from my post, I was speaking in terms of improvement. All three players made excellent strides to improve their games. It was clear that Relvao was beginning to improve as he was able to better trust his knee.

I'm sorry that you needed me to hold your hand through my comment. :greentongueboy:

I certainly make no apologies for making positive and encouraging statements regarding Mason team members.

Wasn't trying to be a knucklehead. I guess nobody understood your comments. I also don't see how it was "clear Relvao was beginning to improve" as he had one good game. But we will see.

Not much showed up in the stats column for Relvao, I'll agree with that. But as he logged more minutes it was clear to me that his defensive presence and greater activity in the offensive paint was causing some problems for opposing teams. Daniel increased his minutes, had a couple of nice blocks, grabbed some rebounds, reduced his fouling, scored a few baskets, disrupted offensive challenges, almost notched a steal from a much smaller guard, and moved more fluently on both ends of the floor.

I chalk up Daniel's late-season improvements to him receiving good coaching and becoming more confident in his repaired knee. In all, Relvao looked way better in late February and early March than he did in early December. Recruits should take notice that Coach P & Co. will help players make strong improvements to their games.

extremely fair assessment. I remember saying to myself "Oh shit" as Ralvao checked in. and then saying "oh Shit" after he blocked a shot and got a steal.

Everyone keeps saying "his knees", but when I watch Relvao his mistakes seem to be mental, and he needs better hands. I never noticed an athletic issue. And I think that's a good thing, mental mistakes are coachable. It is going to be interesting to see how he progresses.

When I watched him play it totally seemed like a knee issue. He wasn't moving the way he is used to so most of the mistakes came from that. Watch some of his HS clips.
