No need to panic if we don't sign either big.

There are plenty of other fish in the sea, and based on recent trends, way more transfers that have yet to be announced.

Plus, I will be very surprised if we don't see a completely different looking Troy after a full offseason of strength work and skill development.

He already has the feet and the athletic explosion. Now he just needs to keep getting stronger in his upper body to better absorb contact and develop two dependable post moves he can use against single coverage.

I would love to have a grad transfer who can come in and play at a high level right away, but it's not a desperate situation.

So serious question, why the excitement over Frederick over Calixte for some here?

Both have similar offers and both are available at this stage of recruiting. One you can develop for four years though and the other two.

For me it's solely the belief that Frederick can step right in and start and be an instant impact player (even if it's just 8/6 a game and good defense), the type of player I feel that we are missing that could elevate us to a fringe NCAA tournament team/top 4 in the conference in a best case scenario.

It's not based on a comparison between the two and who will ultimately be the better player - but who can contribute immediately since we are so close to being a dangerous team next year.

I would temper my expectations of Frederick a little bit in that, a, he's still going to have to adjust to a higher level of competition; and, b, he's 215 pounds right now and I have concerns about him holding up being the lone big in a 4 out offense.

Darryl Monroe came in at about 235-240 and got pushed around a bit his first season here. He ultimately finished the season averaging 6.1 ppg, but it took him awhile to assert himself. Darryl Monroe also I believe played at a higher level JUCO school in Central Florida.

Calixte could be the next Ryan Pearson (contritubing right away) or the next Troy Temara (definitely needs some seasoning), we don't know.

None of the guys we are currently connected with are known commodities at this point.

Obi is visiting Maryland. Guess we can finally put to rest any notion (if there was one) that he ever considered Mason.
Fears and flashbacks of Julian Royal came to me when his name came up.

So with Calixte now committed does Frederick still have an offer? I know it wasn't necessarily one or the other.
I'd still like to see us get a GT and then have 2 scholarships available for the 2018 class. It seems like each year Paulsen's recruiting classes have gotten stronger. As we rise in the conference standings each year we become more appealing so some recruits that don't want to play for the bottom feeder of a conference. The future is looking bright.

It's not really that close a comparison.

Otis played against the best competition -- public and private -- that New Jersey high school basketball had to offer.

He outplayed Isaiah Briscoe (now a sophomore at Kentucky) head to head on more than one occasion when Otis was at Linden and Briscoe played for Roselle Catholic.

Otis was considered by most schools too small and not athletically gifted enough to overcome his lack of size. It was never a question of exposure.

If Fragala had stayed at O'Connell or was putting up big numbers for one of the other DC-area private schools, he'd have more offers.

But schooling a bunch of suburban white boys isn't going to impress D-I coaches. He needs to prove he can do it against guys who are being recruited for college scholarships, not intramurals or local Rec leagues.

He got interest from Mason. The staff had to have checked him out several times since he's local. His size and lack of competition clearly makes him a risk. Offer him a spot as a preferred walk-on. If he proves his ability, he gets his schollie down the road.
