2017 Recruiting

I have a feeling Goanar Mar is going to play a lot of center next year.

At 180lbs, I sure hope not. He plays more like a 3 or a 4, although it's unclear if Paulsen will continue to run with 4 guards or adjust to his roster next season. After last nights performance from our underclassmen bigs, we need someone to step in that can at least pose as a threat offensively. Depending on transfers, I still believe a JUCU may be the best bet or hope and pray Relvao, Dixon, Temara can develop quickly over the summer.

I think Mar has the ability to potentially turn into a 5 (see Jenkins) but he just doesn't have the body just yet to bruise with the big boys. I am very excited to see him next year, his HS stat lines are pretty sick. Also, anybody know the last time we had a McDonalds All-American nominee? I can't recall one.

I know we've had one more recently than Konate. I want to say it was Johnny Williams, but I'm not sure.

If we do have a couple of transfers this year, I would be really interested to see if Paulsen would entertain the idea of a JUCO or grad transfer given the short time he would have to turn around the scholarship, not that he and his staff don't have a record of success doing that with this team already. I would also be happy if he just saved the scholarship(s) and used them to recruit 2018 guys.

I think we might be approaching the stage of this process where bringing in a 1 or 2 year guy to play the 5 is a viable option given the limited experience we will have returning at the position next year. Having said that, I am totally on board with Paulsen's strategy and understand why a coach might be against going the transfer route.

Hundreds, maybe thousands, of kids across the country get nominated as McDonald's All-Americans every year.

I will be more impressed if Goanar wins state player of the year in his school's classification. There is some nice talent coming out of Minnesota so that would be a huge accomplishment.

According to the link above I believe it's a tad more exclusive than that. Mar is one of 6 players represented from Minnesota. Many states will have < 3 players represented. If he makes it to the final 24, that would be a huge accomplishment.

I've watched a couple of mar high light videos and his competition looks a little weak. It looks like he is playing against and with middle schoolers.

Goanar's school, De La Salle, is the dominant basketball program in Minnesota. So yeah, many of the teams they play are completely overmatched.

To be precise, Konate completed his eligibility with 4 career points, a Final Four ring, and a degree. For more about his life, see http://www.nytimes.com/2006/04/01/sports/ncaabasketball/underdog-has-already-beaten-the-odds.html.

way to correct me on the big 4 points, Pablo....Nice digging. Can you briefly describe how averaging 1 point per year over 4 years is anything to brag about? The kid stole a free education from GMU. He was a cheerleader on our bench, nothing more than that.
