2016 Recruiting

Hopefully Paulsen and his staff will, other than the rare exception, re-focus our program on signing skilled basketball players instead of raw athletes.

Coaches with P-5 backgrounds like Bozo believe you can take a bunch of tall, long-limbed guys who can run fast and jump high and teach them to play basketball on an elite level.

We now know that is a recipe for epic failure.

Players like Tyler Scanlon -- or, for that matter that 6-7 Paul Rowley kid from Loudoun who signed with W&M -- are never going to make your eyes pop out of your head because of their pure athleticism. But they know how to play the game.

Our program's greatest success was achieved mostly on the backs of guys who were erroneously considered too short or too slow or too whatever else to play in an elite league.

We need to get back to that ASAP.

Scanlon is apparently getting close to committing. https://goo.gl/2QKr2k

I hesitate to compare anyone to Luke, but Scanlon can REALLY shoot it from range and at 6-7 on the wing he would be our next candidate for the "sneaky athletic" tag.

We're also his best offer at this point, so if he's getting ready to commit and DP wants him, we could be in for some good news soon.

So, I hate to be terribly lazy and do the white guy/white guy comparison, but he's not as fluid as Luke. He reminds more more of joe harris, in that he's a little bit mechanical, but still big and skilled and pretty athletic.

He reminds me of a combination of Keith Van Horn, Wally Szczerbiak and Adam Morrison.

Scanlon's handle and playmaking abilities aren't nearly as advanced as Luke's were after his post-grad year at Hargrave, but his stroke might just be purer and he's a good football player so there's definitely athleticism there to build on.

IMHO, he wouldn't be much of a drop-off (if any) from Ahmad Gilbert despite the fact that Gilbert was rated two stars higher.

Assuming Mayimba is cleared and we have 6 scholarships to offer for the Class of 2016, here's my wish list of recruits (Disclaimer -- this is a list of guys I think we have the best chance to sign):

C -- Jimbo Lull (7-0, 235, 3*)
PF -- Cyril Langevine (6-8, 225, 2*)
SF -- Tyler Scanlon (6-7, 215, 2*)
SG -- Xavier Green (6-6, 190, 2*)
SG -- Ian Boyd (6-3, 190, 2*)
PG -- Jeff Dowtin (6-3, 165, 2*)

Unless Dixon adds strength and develops into a center, we need to sign two centers in the 2016 class since we won't have one on the roster.

One should probably be a JUCO, but DP doesn't seem interested in quick fixes. He might just opt to bite the bullet and develop for the future with freshmen and sophomores.

If all 6 of those guys sign, this is what our extremely young roster would look like:

C -- Lull (Fr), Dixon (So)
PF -- Jenkins (R-Sr), Langevine (Fr)
SF -- Mayimba (R-So), Abram (So), Scanlon (Fr)
SG -- Murrell (So), Green (Fr), Boyd (Fr)
PG -- Moore (Sr), Livingston (So), Dowtin (Fr)

2 seniors, 0 juniors, 5 sophomores, 6 freshmen = Thanks for the memories, Blewitt!!!!!!!!

As a Mason and Centreville High grad, I would have an internal struggle with Scanlon...I would hate where he came from, but love where he is.

One year after the cancer was removed, we will only have two infected cells left. We are healing like Wolverine!

It has to be fairly uncommon for a coach to walk into a job and have the opportunity to rebuild (almost) the entire roster in the first year.

Jimbo Lull could be our most important 2016 recruit simply because we lose so much size after this season. Here's some video of him:

I always worry about splayfooted guys with ankle/knee/foot injuries, but he's big and skilled, and that' goes a long way.
