I barely made it out of Mason with a degree. If I had gone to school in Vegas, I probably wouldn't have made it out alive.

Either of us would have at least owed the mob and at worst been buried like Joe Pesci in Casino.

Liked Scanlon, but more the kind of kid we needed last era. Confident Paulsen gets us similar types.

Not talking about race, either.

Given how our former coach twisted himself into a pretzel in search of a prototypical BCS-style tall PG, who will join me in ROTFLMAO if our current coach snags a kid who's a legit 6-6 PG in just his second recruiting class at Mason?

I like Greg Williams' game a lot, but also because he has the versatility to play on or off the ball.

If DP can sign Dowtin and Williams in the '16 class to go along with Livingston, Murrell and Grayer, I will feel quite happy about our backcourt going forward. Lots of flexibility and different possible combinations with those guys.

Dowtin is visiting Rhody this weekend. The ignorant sh!tbags on their board don't even consider us part of the competition -- they think it's them or Wichita -- despite the fact that he's a DMV kid and our coach has been recruiting him longer than either Hurley or Marshall.

Gotta say, for a program that hasn't been to the NCAA tournament since 1999, the tone of their board is pretty arrogant.

I really hope Dowtin signs with Mason -- not just because it's best for our program, it's a great opportunity for him, too.

Trying not to overreact to disappointing news, but losing this kid is a really bad look for our program.

You simply have to close the deal with a kid in your backyard when the following items overwhelmingly work in your favor:

* His parents would've been within easy driving distance of all home games and most conference games.
* He had mentioned in published reports that he was looking for immediate playing time -- we can offer that, not so much at Rhody
* There's a chance that Hurley won't even be coaching Rhody when Dowtin enrolls in classes; if they make the tournament and win a couple games, somebody will throw a huge bag of cash at him

It's a cold, hard slap in the face about how far we've fallen that the kid would rather risk getting buried on the bench for two years with an NCAA-caliber team than come here to play major minutes right away and help build the program back up.

I guess we are literally starting over again at square one. Excellent.

Eh.

Can't wait to watch Livingston torch this kid over the next few years. Otis, my man!

My comment was no slight to Otis, for whom I've already predicted a terrific college career.

Dowtin is one of those kids who can play on or off the ball, and you can never have enough of those.

Oh well, can't worry about guys who don't want to be here. I'm rolling with the ones who do.

Or be on the transfer market after his coach jumps to a bigger program?

I blame Jeff Dowtin not committing 100% on Paul Hewitt. Lamar Butler is this kid's Assistant Coach in HS. If we can't have Lamar Butler send a recruit our way, I don't know who we can sign.

Not everyone is going to want to play in a conservative, disciplined system. I think we lost recruits during Coach L's tenure for the same reason.

It seems to me that Paulsen is building a team with a lot of versatile forwards. So expect a team that plays inside out.

Yep, and Lamar even retweeted one of the tweets congratulating Dowtin for signing with URI.

I know Lamar has to behave a certain way publicly if he wants to continue coaching, but I can't imagine why he'd be happy to see one of his players spurn his alma mater.

despite the new hire, changes arent seen until the product starts playing. hopefully after a year or so and some a** whippns on URI, guys like Dowtin are walking off the court with their head down saying, damn, I should of gone to Mason.

Well Paulsen had better be one hell of a coach then because we're not in the dogsh!t CAA anymore and we don't just have 2-3 other quality programs competing for the top spot.

The A-10 keeps getting better and better. vcu landed a top-60 wing, Rhody has hauled in four 3-star players in two weeks, and UMass just took commitments from a 4-star PG and 3-star PF as part of a package deal from N'awlins.

While I am 100 percent certain our program will make progress under Paulsen, it will be interesting to see if Cabrera and Edwards are capable of giving him the infrastructure support he needs to consistently compete at the top of a league like the A-10. It's going to take a total culture change.

imo its not so much infrastructure as it is perception of our program. the car salesman pretending to be a Mason Head BBall coach really put us back more years than we'd like to admit. We have, unfortunetly, been thru this before with Westhead. Question is can DP do what the OCM did. Its a question every Mason fan is wondering deep down.
