Just reading tea leaves, but I'm thinking that the competition for Jeff Dowtin will come down to us and Rhody.
I just saw on Twitter that Wichita State's staff is visiting Christian Vital this week.
That tells me that Dowtin isn't their No. 1 PG target. If he is, why would Marshall travel from Kansas to NY to make an in-person visit with a kid who plays the same position?
Also note that Dowtin visited Wichita on Aug. 30, but didn't commit during the visit. Perhaps Wichita gave him a "take it right now or the offer is off the table" type of deal? Wouldn't be unheard of.
Even though Rhody's program is obviously at a stronger place than ours right now, I like our chances against them for a couple reasons:
* Rhody's backcourt will be loaded even if EC Mathews goes to the NBA after this season. If Matthews stays for his senior season, they'll have him, Jared Terrell, Jarvis Garrett and Indiana transfer Stan Robinson at the two guard spots. Not many minutes available.
* If he can win a game or two in the NCAAs this year, Dan Hurley will get multiple big-money offers from P5 programs. He'll almost certainly be gone at some point over the next couple years. Rival schools have to be using that against him on the recruiting trail.
Considering that DP was recruiting Dowtin at Bucknell and offered him right away after taking the Mason job, it's obvious that our new coach really likes the kid. Hopefully the staff can close the deal and get a commitment this weekend.
