The former Bucknell staff offered Parkland's Devante Cross while he was on a visit to GMU.

GIVING DAY 2023
PG Jeff Dowtin (St. Johns) has scheduled an official visit to Mason on September 11.

We're one of his three favorites, but face some tough competition on this one:
He visits Wichita State before us and Rhode Island after us.

It would obviously be a major coup if the staff is able to convince Jeff to pick us over those two schools. He is going to be a terrific college player.

Also PG Ako Adams (O'Connell) is taking visits to ODU, Rice and Louisiana Tech -- the latter of which is coached by former Mason asst Eric Konkol.

All three of those schools have coaches with Virginia ties: Jeff Jones (duh) and Mike Rhoades, who was HC at Randolph-Macon and asst at vcu before getting the top job at Rice.

I wonder if that means we're no longer in play for Ako, or if he'd just rather save his official visits for schools that aren't right in his back yard. Hope it's the latter.

GIVING DAY 2023
I haven't been able to find anything online suggesting that Jeff Dowtin committed to Wichita State during his visit Aug. 30, so I'm hoping that means we're still in the running to sign him.

Based on the latest available information, Dowtin is scheduled to take an official visit to Mason on Friday.

This is an enormous opportunity for DP and the staff to close the deal on an underrated recruit who would be a key piece to our rebuilding effort.

He has already said publicly that he wants to go somewhere he won't have to sit for 2 years before having a chance to start, so that bodes well for us. After Marquise graduates, it would basically be Dowtin and Livingston battling for the PG spot for the next 3 years.

Hopefully the weather is nice this weekend and our coaches/players show him a great time on his visit.

GIVING DAY 2023
Just reading tea leaves, but I'm thinking that the competition for Jeff Dowtin will come down to us and Rhody.

I just saw on Twitter that Wichita State's staff is visiting Christian Vital this week.

That tells me that Dowtin isn't their No. 1 PG target. If he is, why would Marshall travel from Kansas to NY to make an in-person visit with a kid who plays the same position?

Also note that Dowtin visited Wichita on Aug. 30, but didn't commit during the visit. Perhaps Wichita gave him a "take it right now or the offer is off the table" type of deal? Wouldn't be unheard of.

Even though Rhody's program is obviously at a stronger place than ours right now, I like our chances against them for a couple reasons:

* Rhody's backcourt will be loaded even if EC Mathews goes to the NBA after this season. If Matthews stays for his senior season, they'll have him, Jared Terrell, Jarvis Garrett and Indiana transfer Stan Robinson at the two guard spots. Not many minutes available.

* If he can win a game or two in the NCAAs this year, Dan Hurley will get multiple big-money offers from P5 programs. He'll almost certainly be gone at some point over the next couple years. Rival schools have to be using that against him on the recruiting trail.

Considering that DP was recruiting Dowtin at Bucknell and offered him right away after taking the Mason job, it's obvious that our new coach really likes the kid. Hopefully the staff can close the deal and get a commitment this weekend.

Does this mean our pg visit last weekend didn't go as we'd hoped?

Well he didn't commit, so by that very definition, yeah it didn't go as I hoped.

That said, I've seen Jeremy play several times in person because I live in Richmond. He is a very talented kid. Great athlete.

I think Dowtin is a better fit for DP's system but obviously my opinion doesn't mean squat.
